Instead of assuming people move predictably, the system handles non-Gaussian, uncertain human motion, even cases where someone might suddenly turn or change direction. It uses a fast Monte Carlo approximation to estimate collision probability across hundreds of sampled trajectories in real time. If a trajectory’s risk crosses a threshold, it gets rejected. If not, risk becomes part of the cost function. In testing a Clearpath Jackal navigated real crowds while keeping collision risk under a defined limit, outperforming approaches like Scenario-based MPC and standard MPPI.
