That figure comes directly from the council itself, released through an FOI I submitted. This is the same council now telling residents it needs to put council tax up because there isn’t enough money for frontline services. Let’s be clear: Tower Hamlets only raises around £100m a year from council tax. A 5% rise brings in about £5m. They could have avoided this entirely by cutting just 1–2% from their spending on consultants etc over the last few years. Instead, they’re reaching straight into residents’ pockets. And remember, this is a council whose own auditors have exposed: ❌ finances that don’t add up ❌ contracts that don’t exist ❌ procurement rules bypassed ❌ money missing from care contracts ❌ hundreds of active fraud investigations So forgive residents for not trusting them to spend even more money wisely. People in Tower Hamlets are fed up. They know this isn’t working. Something has to change.
