Compacted soils don't have the conditions to support the biology that creates and maintains soil structure. They typically fall apart quickly in a slake test.

No-till (with covers) has a similar result…you probably know that but I had to throw in a plug for “bio-mimicry.” It also does better if something was grazing on it (think grazing covers or even in our case grazing winter wheat AND covers)

This video was taken in eastern Colorado just 30 minutes after a 1" rain. Notice the ponding and erosion already starting in this recently planted field. This is a symptom of soils that lack biology, and have poor aggregation and structure. They can't absorb water, so the rain runs off instead of soaking in. Without living roots and good soil structure, bare ground struggles to infiltrate rainfall, especially intense storms like this one appears to have been. Healthy soils act like sponges. Here's how we can capture more rain and prevent erosion: - Keep living roots in the ground as much as possible with cover crops - Minimize tillage to preserve soil structure - Build organic matter through residue and compost - & so much more! An overwintered or spring planted cover crop make a huge difference. Checking the state of fields at Spring Farm. Tomorrow will also be assessing other fields in Shurugwi. The rains have been good and it's the right time to quickly apply Ammonium Nitrate or urea. The incumbency is upon the farmer to play their part. Good agricultural practice should be normalized; soil testing and use of appropriate chemicals at the right time. For those like myself, suffering from soul erosion there is a need to use contours. They help fight erosion, promote water retention and support soil structure. He’s right. Cows are environmentally sustainable. Methane from cows is part of the natural carbon cycle that after 10-12 years breaks down into natural CO2 and water. Grass absorbs the CO2 by photosynthesis and the cycle repeatedly continues. Cow manure also improves the soil.

This video shows real-time carbon flows inside a mycorrhizal network. Mycorrhizal fungi form a symbiotic relationship with ~ 90% of terrestrial plants and have done so for 400 million years. These specialized fungi provide plants with nutrients and water in exchange for carbon-based exudates the plant produces through photosynthesis. Current estimates say that between 4 and 20 percent of all CO2 pulled in by plants ends up stored in mycorrhizal tissues. Considering plants need to build an entire above-ground structure, a root system, and produce flowers, fruits, and seeds, this is an astounding amount of carbon to allocate to mycorrhizal biomass. A recent review study estimates that global plant communities transfer 13.1 gigatons of CO2 to the underground mycelium of mycorrhizal fungi each year – equivalent to roughly 1/3 of annual CO2 emissions from fossil fuels. The amount of time the carbon is locked up in fungi’s mycelium remains unknown. Nonetheless, the influx of such a massive amount of carbon into the soil is a boon for soil ecology, nutrient cycling, and the health of water cycles.
