Today, the Gov's new Immigration System Reforms begin. But let's not forget who got us into this mess: Priti Patel & the Tories. There used to be an annual cap of 20,700 non-EU 'skilled' work visas. But Patel REMOVED this cap in her 'post-Brexit points-based system’, starting Jan 2021. Removing this cap had disastrous consequences. 2023 was a pivotal year- the UK granted almost 200,000 non-EU 'skilled' work visas (10x more than in 2020) in addition to 89,000 non-EU heath & care worker visas. The top 5 non-EU countries granted these visas were India, Nigeria, Philippines, Zimbabwe & Pakistan (hence the huge influx of migrants from developing countries). Net migration in 2023 was 906,000 (with 1,002,000 non-EU arrivals, and 96,000 EU departures). Yes illegal migration is terrible. But the bigger problem is legal migration. Last year, out of the 180,000 permanent visas handed out by the Labor government - only 1 in 3 were actually qualified skilled migrants. This is not the skilled migration Australians were promised. Bringing in a massive number of unskilled migration in the middle of a housing crisis is hurting everyday Australians. A One Nation government will only allow migrants with skills that Australia requires.

Novara Media’s Aaron Bastani visited Wigan – part of the Makerfield constituency – ahead of the 18 June byelection that enabled Burnham to become prime minister. While there, he saw the degradation of the high street that has come to define 21st-century Britain – vape shops, betting shops and street scars. "Dare I say, it's the political equivalent of low self-esteem," Bastani said. Bastani has spent months advocating for the government to "go after dodgy vape shops". This week, the prime minister announced that councils would get more powers to stop gambling and vape shops from opening. "I don't see why anywhere should have to accept they have empty shops, vape shops and the challenges that come with that," Burnham said.
