Thought I'd take a look at the feedback with this one. Pretty basic — driver breaks law, puts me in danger. Expected: lots of support from other road users. Discovered: these comments are the reason cyclists wear helmets.

The bit I don't get: Drivers have to leave a huge gap for cyclists, but cyclists will undertake cars in any tiny gap. If the safe distance is 1.5 metres then cyclists shouldn't be allowed to squeeze through gaps that would bring them closer than 1.5 metres of a car.

Agree it's very dangerous driving and glad you're okay. Would it not have been safer for you to take prime position in the middle of the lane at the lights, so that he couldn't try to pass you until it was safe to do so?

HWC Rules H1–H3: drivers must protect vulnerable road users. This kind of overtake can be Careless Driving under the Road Traffic Act 1988. Police treat close passes as careless/dangerous overtakes. Filmed this recently in Amsterdam. Many cyclists, e-bike & moped riders took priority over pedestrians at zebra crossings, some at speed. We are told it works in the Netherlands, however, it is very clear that Dutch pedestrians are not at the top of the hierarchy of road users.

This excellent video from Mikey shows the issues we have in London with red light jumping. Seeing cyclists place themselves in serious danger just so they do not have to stop. Placing increased danger on one’s self to save a few seconds. Not worth it …. The driver at the end of the clip was hopefully pulled over and check for obvious reasons
