Fertility is collapsing all around the world, not just in the developed West: - Mexico now has lower fertility than the US (even non-Hispanic whites!). - Arab-Israeli fertility is now lower than that of Jewish Israelis. - For first time in 200 years, rich people are having MORE kids than poor. Economist Jesús Fernández-Villaverde (Jesús Fernández-Villaverde) sat down with me and Pieter Garicano to talk about the economics of the fertility collapse, why education can be such a curse for birth rates, why the collapse is happening almost as much in the Muslim and developing worlds as in the rich world, and why so many attempts to address it fail. We also discuss 'no regrets' policies that could help: clearer data for students about the value (or not) of college degrees; lotteries for admissions to the top universities; subsidies for third or fourth children; and, of course, bigger, nicer and more plentiful housing. Listen now. Discrete Fourier Transform by hand ✍️ ~ 12 steps walkthrough below Here is a little-known secret about the DFT and the inverse DFT: it is just matrix multiplication in both directions, one the transpose of the other, exactly like the forward pass and backpropagation I drew in other examples. Goal: recover which cosine waves a signal is made of, using nothing but multiplication and addition. = 1. Given = Three signals written as sums of cosines, and a fourth, X, that we do not know yet. = 2. Frequency matrix F = Let us write the coefficients as a matrix. Each signal is a row, each frequency a column, so A = cos(w) + 2cos(2w) becomes [1, 2, 0, 0]. = 3. Sample the waves = We read the four cosine waves at ten discrete time points. That word "discrete" is the whole difference between this and the continuous transform. = 4. Cosine matrix W = Let us write those samples as a matrix: each frequency a row, each time point a column. = 5. Frequency to time = We multiply F by W. That combines the four cosine waves in the proportions F specifies, and the result T is the three signals as they would look in time. = 6. Transpose = Let us stand each signal up as a column. = 7. Time to frequency = We multiply W by that transpose. Every cell is the dot product of one signal with one cosine wave, which measures how much of that wave the signal contains. Zero means none of it. = 8. Scale = Let us multiply by 2/n, with n = 10. The projections come out five times too large, and this is the correction. = 9. Transpose back = We turn it back around, and it is F again, exactly. That is the check: the transform recovered the coefficients we started from. = 10. Now solve for X = Let us run the same multiplication on the one signal whose recipe we never knew. = 11. Scale = We divide by 5 again. = 12. Transpose back = And X reads [0, 0, 3, 2], which says X = 3cos(3w) + 2cos(4w). Note: I originally drew this to show that the DFT is a special case of a convolution layer, its filters fixed to sine and cosine waves rather than learned. No wonder, then, that a convolution layer free to learn its own filters can be trained to process signals. 💾 Save this post!

🚨 PAY ATTENTION Bitcoin’s next cycle bottom won’t be defined by price. The only thing that matters now: Time. Every Bitcoin cycle follows the same structure: 35 bars expansion + 12 bars contraction. 2015–2017: expansion 2018: contraction 2018–2021: expansion 2022: contraction Now look at where we are. The expansion phase is complete. The contraction has just begun. And this phase always takes time. Days from cycle top → final low: 2012: ~400 days 2016: ~360 days 2020: ~370 days We are not there yet. Based on historical timing, the highest-probability window for the real bottom is: July–November 2026. That matters more than any price level people are watching. Most traders think like this: “I’ll buy when it hits X.” But real bottoms don’t form at obvious levels. Below $50,000 I’m a buyer. Regardless of when it happens. July–November 2026 I’m a buyer. Regardless of price. If one of those conditions is met, I buy. No hesitation. Yes, I started accumulating in the $60k range already. Even though the timing window isn’t here yet. Back in October, around $120k, I said I’d be a strong buyer near $60k. People ignored it. “BTC will never go below $100k again.” Now we’re here. And there’s still one signal missing: NUPL. Every major bottom: - 2018 - COVID - 2022 Formed when NUPL entered the blue zone. We haven’t seen that yet. Remember: For the record, I was the only one publicly calling the exact bottom at $16,000 three years ago and the top at $126,000 in October. If you missed those calls, don’t worry. I’ll call the next one too. Turn notifications on. If you’re not following yet, you’ll understand why that was a mistake later.

🚨 S&P 500 IS ENTERING EUPHORIA ZONE... The index just printed a fresh ATH near 7,600 50+ days of straight uptrend No meaningful pullbacks. No rebalancing. Just relentless grinding higher This is what the late stage of a cycle looks like And most people won't recognize it until it's already too late Here's what I actually think happens next First, the melt-up continues A push toward 7,700-7,800 is still on the table That's when distribution begins Smart money starts quietly exiting while retail is still buying the narrative Then comes the first sell-off Not big one - just enough to shake weak hands and breed complacency "See? It bounced. Everything's fine" That's the trap Because after the complacency phase ends, the real move starts And the real move goes toward 4,000-3,500 That's not a typo That's a 50%+ drawdown from current levels Now here's what makes this cycle different Three of the most hyped companies in the world - SpaceX, OpenAI and Anthropic - are all expected to go public in 2026 History is clear on what happens when the biggest IPOs in a generation arrive at same time 1999-2000: dot-com peak 2021: SPAC and tech euphoria peak Every time IPO pipeline floods at cycle highs, it's because insiders need liquidity They know something retail doesn't Add historically stretched valuations on top of that Add slowing buybacks - single biggest source of equity demand for past decade And you have a market that's priced for perfection in a world that stopped being perfect a long time ago Euphoria doesn't feel like risk That's exactly what makes it dangerous I've mapped this cycle for months When I see the distribution phase begin, I'll post the signal here - same as always Turn on notifs. You'll want to be early on this one

🚨 BREAKING: MICHAEL SAYLOR BEGINS SELLING $BTC Man who said "you do not sell your Bitcoin" is now selling Bitcoin Market reacts with immediate panic selling: $BTC < $72K Let that sink in Strategy holds 843,738 BTC - purchased for $63.87 billion at an average price of $75,700 per coin That's the largest corporate Bitcoin position in history And for years, Saylor repeated same thing over and over: Never sell. Never waver. Never flinch Then on an earnings call in May 2026, he said this: "We will probably sell some Bitcoin to fund a dividend - just to inoculate market" That single sentence broke a 5-year religion Here's what changed Strategy now carries $1.5B in annual preferred-stock dividend obligations Those dividends have to be paid in cash Bitcoin doesn't pay dividends So Saylor faces a choice: dilute shareholders with new equity, take on more debt or sell some BTC He chose door number three And there's more Company is sitting on $2.2 billion in unrealized tax benefits tied to high-cost-basis Bitcoin Selective sales could harvest those benefits - legally reducing their tax bill while offloading coins at the same time This isn't panic. This is optimization But here's what the market isn't pricing in Strategy owns approximately 4% of all Bitcoin that will ever exist If they become a consistent seller - even of small amounts - bid structure for BTC changes permanently Every fund, every ETF, every HODLer built their thesis on one assumption: Saylor is a buyer. Always That assumption just died The only time Strategy sold Bitcoin before this was December 2022 - 704 BTC for $11.8 million, purely for a tax loss This time the motivation is structural. Recurring. Tied to obligations that don't go away Watch the Coinbase Prime wallet Watch the 8-K filings The first real sale won't be announced - it'll be discovered I've been tracking institutional Bitcoin flows for years When the signal turns, I post it here first Turn on notifications. You'll want to be early on this one

Adam Brown (Adam Brown) is back! General relativity is said to be the most beautiful idea the human mind has ever produced. Most of us will never get to fully appreciate its elegance by taking the 20-lecture graduate course Adam taught on it at Stanford. But in the video below, Adam distills the key idea at its heart so clearly and compellingly that even I could keep up lol. At the core of general relativity, Einstein is trying to figure out the principle behind a particular coincidence: that the mass that resists acceleration and the mass that gravity pulls on just happen to be exactly the same. Adam then leads us through the path of insight which Einstein called his “happiest thought.” Then Adam lectures on black holes. First, by showing how even under special relativity you could create a perpetual motion machine if black holes weren't truly black. And then, by explaining why the observations of an infalling observer and a distant bystander to the black hole would be so radically different Adam leads Blueshift, the team at Google DeepMind cracking science and reasoning. Which gave us the opportunity to discuss at the very end how close we are to AIs that could rediscover general relativity from scratch. Stay till the close for some philosophy of science. 0:00:00 – The coincidence that led Einstein to general relativity 0:16:42 – Gravity is a consequence of curved spacetime, not a force 0:31:46 – Why black holes prevent unlimited energy extraction 0:47:12 – Black holes are the ultimate power plants 1:13:50 – What falling into a black hole would actually feel like 1:18:51 – The three ways we know black holes are real 1:24:21 – The first time we saw gravity bend light 1:29:33 – How far can AI get without experimental evidence?
