Three months ago on TBPN, Mark Gurman explained why John Ternus is the "only guy" that could become the next CEO of Apple: "All signs are turning towards Ternus." "Ternus is 50. Everyone else on the Apple executive team is late 50s through their mid 60s. Turning 66 this... year, in the case of Tim Cook. You're Apple's board, you like continuity, you like an insider, you like people who know what they're doing, and who have been there for a while, they know where the bodies are buried." "At 50, he's the only one. Let's say Tim Cook hangs out for another three to five years. You're not going to appoint another CEO who's 65 or 70 years old. He's the only guy." "Apple gets the vast majority of its revenue from hardware. He's the hardware guy. Have they screwed up any hardware since he's been in charge? No. He's a steady hand who knows what he's doing. He's really the only choice." "A few months ago, he took full control of the Apple Watch engineering team that was co-run with the old COO until he retired." "When they started soft-firing the Head of AI [John Giannandrea], they took the robotic stuff away from him and gave that to Ternus. And then the real news that I broke last week is, even though on paper Tim Cook is running the Apple design teams, he's not. It's Ternus. He took that over at the end of last year."show more

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, who got the scoop on John Ternus's new gig as Apple CEO, explains why he thinks Ternus will do "a hell of a job" in his new role: "He has product sensibilities that Tim Cook simply doesn't have. He has product decision-making ability that Tim Cook certainly has, but wouldn't utilize because he himself knows that product-based decisions are not where he could have the most impact." "Just like Tim Cook really oversaw the operations part of Apple as CEO and left product development to other members of the executive team, my expectation is that John Ternus will be intimately involved with the product side of the organization as he was in his prior role to CEO. And will leave the operational side to people like Sabih Khan and Priya Balasubramaniam — the people who run the operations division at Apple." "He's going to pick his spots, and his spots are hardware and product development. There's a reason that when he chose his successor for the hardware engineering organization, he chose Tom Marieb. He's not an innovator, but he's an incredible execution guy when it comes to hardware engineering and product quality. Ternus did that because his belief is that he will still be intimately involved and still be that product visionary for Apple in this new chief executive position."

Apple has a new CEO: John Ternus, a 25-year company veteran who most recently served as Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering. He's taking over from Tim Cook, who led Apple for 15 years and grew it into a $4.6 trillion company. Ternus now has the challenge in the AI race against rivals like Google and OpenAI, while consumers face higher prices tied to a global chip shortage.

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman says hiring John Giannandrea to lead Apple's AI team has been the biggest mistake of Tim Cook's career at Apple: "In 2018, they hired John Giannandrea. He was this high flyer at Google. He ran AI in search, and Apple thought they would hire this guy and really hit the ground running and be at the forefront of AI." "Just seven years earlier, they announced Siri in 2011. There was absolutely nothing like it. It was a breakthrough. But then it became utter junk." "You haven't even scratched the surface of how big a problem this is for Apple. They've completely screwed up AI in every way, and it comes down to hiring the wrong people and entrusting the wrong people."

John Ternus, Apple's incoming CEO, on the Steve Jobs story that shapes every product decision at Apple: Ternus recalls the moment in his own words: "I think you know one of my favorite stories... It was about Steve when he was moving a piece of furniture, a chest of drawers and pulled it away from the wall and looked at the back and was just reflecting on, you know, the carpenter had made it beautiful. It finished the back as beautifully as the rest of it, even though nobody was going to see it." For Ternus, the story is a working philosophy: "I think about that all the time because I think that perfectly exemplifies what we do here." He points to Apple's most affordable Mac as proof that this standard applies across the entire product line, not just the premium tier: "We've been talking about the MacBook Neo. I mean, here is our most affordable Mac we've ever made, and it's absolutely beautiful. And if you open it up and look inside, it's just as beautiful, right?" Ternus continues: "That's true on an iPhone Pro Max or a MacBook Pro or an iPad Pro, but it's also true on a MacBook Neo. That's what we do." The takeaway is a clear signal about the direction Apple is heading under his leadership: "It's just been really good to kind of think about that and reflect on that because that is probably the best kind of clue as to where we're going in the future is we're going to keep pushing in that same way." The lesson? Excellence isn't about what people see, it's about what you refuse to compromise on, even when no one's looking. That principle shaped Apple under Jobs and Cook, and it's the standard Ternus is committing to carry forward.

Rob Smedley old Ferrari engineer "I'm going to, give Lewis a shout out on this, it also feels like, he pushes the team hard, right? And we've talked about this before, when you get a driver of his standing in the team, the team just feels, you know, 1% more capable, um, and you're adding, like, you know, the 2,000 women and men who work at Ferrari, the little like 1% they all add up" Jake: Yeah, um, and you still speak to people there. Was that the general vibe, is that Lewis is? Rob : "Yeah, definitely, definitely. We've talked about it before. I mean, they love him, you know, everything that I, you know, when I talk to the guys and, you know, one on one or like the group chats that I'm in, you know, they all absolutely, uh, love him because he's delivering, right? And he's a seven-time world champion, and they know that he is somebody who can deliver, he can still deliver world championships, but he's pushing them as well. But he's pushing them in the right way, and they recognize that. The guys who, from who've been there for 20 years or more, they recognize what, you know, the, the similarities between him and Michael"

Lindsey Graham on Trump: "I want to talk to the Trump supporters for a minute. I don't know who you are and I don't know why you like this guy. I think what you like about him, he appears to be strong when the rest of us are weak. He's a very successful businessman. He's going to make everything great. He's going to take all the problems of the world and put them in a box and make your life better. That's what he's selling. "Here's what you're buying. He's a race baiting, xenophobic, religious bigot. He doesn't represent my party. He doesn't represent the values that the men and women who wear the uniform are fighting for. I've been in the air force for 33 years. I retired this June. He's the ISIL man of the year, by the way."

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman says that even though Apple partnered with Google Gemini for Siri, they actually run their business on Anthropic. "Apple runs on Anthropic at this point. Anthropic is powering a lot of the stuff Apple's doing internally in terms of product development and a lot of their internal tools." "They have custom versions of Claude running on their own servers internally, too. This Google deal just came together a few months ago. They were not going to use Google. Apple actually was going to rebuild Siri around Claude. But Anthropic was holding them over a barrel. They wanted a ton of money from them, several billion dollars a year, and at a price that doubled on an annual basis for the next three years." From his January appearance on the show.

An anonymous NBA GM on the Jaylen Brown trade “This is a classic case of the credit goes to the guy who scores but they're not driving team success. There's guys like this all over the league, the difference is he's not at $40M... he's at $60M. It's really hard to tie up that much money in your salary cap for one player unless they're truly generational, and he's not even close to that. Also, the league is getting smarter now. And here's the thing: the dumb teams are the cheap teams.” (Via Tim MacMahon)

Ian Wright says Kylian Mbappe could go on to be the greatest World Cup player ever. Ian Wright: "Watching him the other day, when I went and watched him live against Iraq, you could tell there's something different about his energy and the fact that he is the leader of the team. Right, Pat? He's the leader of the team. You could see it. You know, almost like he's welcoming people in. You see the celebration with Dembélé, who has won a couple of Ballond'ors or could go on to win another one. He's embracing it. I think that he's gone to that place where he's the leader of this team, and he's not bothered about that. Just maturity as well." Roy Keane: "Is that just maturity as well." Ian Wright: "Yeah. I think so. Roy." Roy Keane:: "Getting a bit older, a bit wiser." Presenter: "He's 27 now. You know, he's been in the game for almost a decade." Patrick Viera: "He's a different player from the last World Cup. He's got more maturity. He understands the game much better, about how he has to bring the players around him because, at the end, he needs those players to perform." Presenter: "He's only two goals behind Messi in terms of World Cup scorers." Ian Wright: "Yeah, but when we look at it, he's won the World Cup when he was 18. He just missed out on penalties in '22, and now he's in another one. You know, we're talking about somebody who could probably go on to be the greatest ever in respect to the World Cup. But at the moment, at 27 now... it seems like he's in exactly the right place where he needs to be right now."

“one of us” director stefan van de graaff describes kit connor’s talent, humility, and grounded personality: zach randles-friedman: “is there anything that surprised you about kit connor, that whenever you were working with him that you were just like you hadn't, you didn't expect that?” stefan van de graaff: “yeah, this is insane. when we cast kit, it was a week and a half before we filmed, and the film is very dialogue heavy and it's written in free verse, so everything is, it's almost like pseudo kind of faux shakespearean, very performative language by design. and he stepped into this role where he's basically in every single scene and he's basically talking the entire movie.” zach: “yeah.” stefan: “he, i don't recall him missing a line.” zach: “wow.” stefan: “i don't know how he did it. i was just telling people at a, at a screener, a private screener the other night, it was like a superhuman, it was like witnessing a miracle. i don't know how he did it. he would go and he would memorize the next five pages of material the night before and he would come and he wouldn't miss a line. and that's just like, it's not normal, especially not normal for a, a script like this. so that was one thing is that he is insanely gifted. it's not just like he's one of those guys that gets, you know, yes, he's like incredibly handsome and charismatic and all those things, and there's a lot of those that kind of crawl through the ranks on, you know, on the merit of being beautiful. he is not that—or he's also that, let's say. he is also just incredibly talented in a way that i'm like, i, i, i don't know how you did that. he's also a lot taller than you might think.” zach: “how tall is he?” stefan: “he's over six feet.” zach: “oh, i did not, i thought he was like 5’8.” stefan: “no, no, no, he's, he's 6 foot, 6’1 probably. i'm 6’2 and he's, he's, he's not a small guy.” zach: “wow, that does surprise me actually, because he looks so short on tv.” stefan: “yeah, you watch heartstopper and he looks like, i think he just looks small and whatever. he's not, he's and, and then obviously he's gotten very, he's lifted a lot for a number of roles and stuff, and so like, he's big, like he's, he's a, yeah. he's a big guy and is also just incredibly, he is also real people. he is just like, you'll, he has no pretentiousness about him, just humble as can be. he's from like a small kind of borough of london. and he's just, he's just a remarkable person, really calm, really just like even-keeled, steady guy. i don't, i don't think that there's a person who, if they met him, that they couldn't like kit. i think that he's, he's just one of those types of people that you're just like, that's, that's a great person.” zach: “i love it that he's not, i love it that the fame didn't go to his head because i, there's a couple of people that just made it really big and one of them, i think it, i see them how they're acting now with like paparazzi and stuff, and i think that the fame has gone to their head, the way that they're acting now, and it's, it makes me kind of sad.” stefan: “i don't think that will ever happen with kit because i think that he will hide himself before that starts to happen. like he would sooner disappear and like act in one movie every couple of years and you're like, “where did that guy go?” than he would ever start to let that go—i would be shocked if he ever went that way, from what i know of him.” zach: “well he's been out, he's been there long enough, though if that was going to happen, i think it would have happened already too, because he's famous enough.” stefan: “absolutely.” zach: “yeah.” stefan: “and he's so young that it's like, my brain like wasn't fully formed at his age, and so for him to be behaving the way that he is as young as he is, i'm like, ok, well, it, in 10 years from now, you're not going to be any more susceptible to giving into the ego than he is today. so i think that he is like, yeah, he's a, he's a sure bet if, if, if you're gambling on what actor is going to be around for a long time and is going to have just like a really prolific career of incredible pieces of work, i—and i feel like i can say this because it was no genius on my part or anything that got him, we got really lucky to get him—and so i feel like i can comfortably say like almost as like a, as a fly on the wall in the room with him, just being very fortunate to work with him, that like he's, he's going to go really, really far and he deserves every little bit of success.” 🔗:

Marc Andreessen on why the founder model keeps winning: "You're much more likely to build something important in the 21st century if you start with a founder and train them on management, than you are to start with the manager and try to train them on being a founder." "All the old incumbent institutions in the last hundred years that are run by managers... they're all collapsing in trust and credibility because they can't adapt." "When Mark [Zuckerberg] started Facebook, he had never had a job before. Not only had he not managed people, he had not worked for anybody." "His learning curve was vertical." "He spends an enormous amount of time learning how to become better at running these things at large scale. He's still the founder and he's still the innovator and he's still like a fountain of ideas on what to do." "He's the classic example of the double threat." "And then what happens is other founders look at that and they're like, 'oh, I could do that.'" Marc Andreessen 🇺🇸 with David Senra

🚨Joe Rogan on Jon Jones. 🗣“And there's a few guys that they go on these long runs and just like Jon Jones is the greatest example. His run is so long. It's crazy to be relevant at his age after being the youngest UFC champion ever at 22.” 🗣“He's just a different human being. He's the guy that you look at, and you go, 'How is he still doing this?' He started at 22, he was the youngest champion ever, and he's still, he's still right there. He's still the guy. It's like, how do you do that? How do you maintain that level of excellence for that long?” 📽 Via (Joe Rogan)

September 1997. Steve Jobs stands before Apple employees and tells them he's been up until 3am finishing an ad. He's been back at the company for eight weeks. Apple lost $1 billion that year. Three months earlier, WIRED put Apple's logo on its cover, wrapped in barbed wire, with the word "Pray." He starts by saying what he's found since coming back. He couldn't figure out Apple's own product line. He spent weeks trying to understand which model was which and how they fit together. He talked to customers. They couldn't figure it out either. He cut 70% of the product roadmap. People whose projects were canceled were, in his words, "three feet off the ground with excitement" because, for the first time in years, someone told them where the company was going. Then he says something about marketing that changed how every tech company thinks about advertising. He says Nike sells a commodity. They sell shoes. But when you think of Nike, you feel something different than a shoe company. Nike never talks about their products in ads. Never tells you why their air soles are better than Reebok's. "They honor great athletes. And they honor great athletics. That's who they are." He compares it to the dairy industry spending 20 years trying to convince people milk was good for them, failing, and then running "Got Milk," which doesn't even mention the product. Focuses on its absence. He says Apple spends a fortune on advertising. "You'd never know it." Then he fires the ad agency. Not just fires them. Apple was running a competition with 23 agencies. He scrapped the whole thing and hired Chiat/Day, the agency he'd worked with a decade earlier on the 1984 Macintosh commercial that advertising professionals voted the best ad ever made. The question they asked themselves: "Our customers want to know who is Apple and what is it that we stand for?" His answer: "Apple at its core, its core value, is that we believe that people with passion can change the world for the better. And that those people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones that actually do." Then he plays the ad. In this room. To Apple employees. For the first time. "Here's to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers." He says almost none of these people had ever appeared in an advertisement before. He personally obtained Yoko Ono's permission to use John Lennon. He says the estates and living subjects agreed because of their feelings toward Apple. "I don't think there is another company on Earth that could have done this campaign." The ad broke that Sunday during the network premiere of Toy Story on ABC. Two 60-second spots. Newspaper ads in the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, and USA Today. Billboards in major cities. Buses in five cities featuring Rosa Parks. Painted walls. The whole thing. Apple's stock was around $0.10 split-adjusted when this meeting happened. The company is worth $3.68 trillion today. Think Different ran for five years. Every product that came after, the iMac, iPod, iPhone, iPad, was built on the identity this campaign established by a guy who'd been back at the company for eight weeks and finished the ad at three in the morning. Video: Steve Jobs internal staff meeting at Apple, September 1997. This is the first time the Think Different campaign has been shown to employees. Jobs had been back at Apple for eight weeks. Footage leaked from an internal recording.
