Here we see, for the first time ever, the transport of unbonded protons across the CERN site, a big step towards portable #antimatter. CERN’s Antimatter Factory is the only place in the world where scientists can store and study antiprotons. But scientists at the BASE experiment hope to change this state of matter with an apparatus designed to store and transport antimatter. ELON MUSK: “The way to expand compute is really in space. There’s a lot of room in space. And if you look at the size of Earth relative to the Sun or relative to the Solar System, you realize just how tiny it is. We’re very, very tiny. We only receive about half a billionth of the Sun’s energy. So you can really think of Earth as being like a tiny dust mote in a vast darkness. So the way to expand compute without, you know, using up all the land on Earth is to do so in space. And then you can do it without using space for power and water on Earth; you can just do it in space. So I think we’ll probably be launching our first AI satellites next year, and then we’ll be able to do that, I think, at large scale in about two years.”

In a paper published today in nature, the ALPHA collaboration at CERN’s Antimatter Factory shows that, within the precision of their experiment, atoms of antihydrogen – a positron orbiting an antiproton – fall to Earth in the same way as their matter equivalents. How many mechanics does it take to catch one tiny kitten trapped in the underside of a car? Apparently… the whole shop (or at least 5 of them) 🐾 This tiny kitten was running all over the underside of a Honda while it was up on the lift. The crew had tools and flashlights out, everyone trying to track where it was moving next. There was a lot of “he’s right here!” and gentle chasing before they finally got him out safe. One of the guys ended up holding the tiniest little fluff ball like he’d just won the lottery. Would your local shop drop everything and turn into a full kitten rescue team, or is this next-level wholesome?
