To collaborate successfully, you have to do three things: First, put your honest thoughts on the table for everybody to look at. Everyone's thoughts are different, and you have to be willing to look at them openly. Second, know the art of thoughtful disagreement. Ask yourself: how do you... work through disagreements to get a better answer than you would have come up with individually? Third, if the disagreements remain, you have to have protocols for getting past that. In our case, we have an "idea meritocracy" through believability-weighted decision-making. Aaron Glenn was asked if he prefers to build the team's ecosystem and then put in a young quarterback or vice versa: "I think it depends on, where's your team at right now? You always look at that. Do you have the talent or the skill on the outside, in the backfield to be able to say, 'listen, we're going to get a rookie quarterback and let those guys make plays for him.' Do you have a guy already? And usually if you have a guy, he can make the skill players look better than what they are, too. To me, it always depends on who you have. Twitch founder Emmett Shear on how to resolve product roadmap disagreements Emmett argues that disagreement on what to build is actually quite rare after everyone has talked to users and looked at the data. Most disagreements in startups arise because people like to come up with product ideas without talking to users first: “You talk to your users first, and then you have ideas about your product. Almost everyone does it in the opposite order” He continues: “If you find yourself thinking: ‘I’m going to go talk to my users to validate my product idea’, you’ve gone horribly off the rails…If you haven’t talked to users and you haven’t looked at data, you don’t get to have an opinion about the product. After studying over 500 years of history, I’ve found there are really only three things you need to do to build a healthy society. First, educate your young people well—not just to be capable, but to be civil. If you have capable, civil people in a productive society, that’s a big part of the battle. Second, the finances must be sound: earn more than you spend and have more assets than liabilities. And third, don't get into a war—internally or externally. If you can do those three things, you can have a prosperous, self-reinforcing society.
