Today is the first anniversary of the liberation of Snake Island from the 🇷🇺 invaders. It is one of our major victories. Remember, last year, in the spring, no one expected from 🇺🇦 that we would be able to implement, in particular, this fundamental defense task – to provide security to Snake Island, and therefore to a significant part of the Black Sea water area. But our soldiers did it. 🇷🇺 terrorists needed Snake Island to destroy the entire south of our country, our beautiful Odesa and other cities. Our soldiers stopped them and drove them out of Snake Island. Ukraine and Ukrainians are much stronger than anyone thinks about us. Sometimes, stronger than we are used to thinking about ourselves. It is heartbreaking to hear of the loss of life in Kyiv this morning in this appalling attack by Russia. I am praying for all those affected and their families. We were safe and well in a very secure shelter but it is a stark reminder of the dangers people here are facing every day, even when it doesn’t hit the headlines. A reminder again that, with all the crises in the world, we must not and will not forget Ukraine.

It is clear that this global step will allow us to expand our defense capabilities. Because it is only with powerful aircraft that an air defense system can be complete. Many words have already been said that if the world had been decisive back in 2008, many things would have been different. And it’s one of the most important Christian holy sites not only in our region but for the entire Christian world. It was from the Lavra and the hills of Kyiv that Christianity spread eastward across our part of Europe. Attacking such places is, in fact, a crime against humanity. Of course, we are preparing our responses to such Russian attacks.

The battles for Moshchun against the Russian occupiers played a crucial role in the defense of Kyiv, and therefore the defense of our entire country. Together, we honored the memory of our fallen warriors who fought for Ukraine’s freedom, and expressed our gratitude to all the heroes — thanks to whom we are here today – in Ukrainian Kyiv, in our independent state. I thank the 🇺🇸 Senators for the strong bipartisan support of this issue of justice for 🇺🇦 and all victims of 🇷🇺 terror. In dictatorships like 🇷🇺, money is the highest value. And especially for those who serve the ruling regime or are actually the owners of state structures. When the terrorist state and all 🇷🇺 individuals whose collaboration with the Kremlin created the conditions for aggression or who are a public cover for 🇷🇺 corrupt officials lose their money, a very important goal will be achieved - they will feel what loss is. Today, in Slavutych, in the north of our country, I met with the heads of communities of the northern regions – Kyiv and Chernihiv regions. It is very important to support our people here and strengthen our defenses, and that is exactly what we are doing. This concerns protective infrastructure – fortifications and other defensive measures – as well as strengthening the border, which will be reinforced further. It also concerns our Defense and Security Forces stationed in this direction – toward Chernihiv and Kyiv from the territory of neighboring Belarus, which Russia is eager to draw deeper into this war, and from Russia’s Bryansk region. We have the capability to strengthen our defenses. We also have the capability to act preventively with regard to Russian territory from which threats may emerge, and with regard to the de facto leadership of Belarus, which must stay on its toes – that is, clearly understand that there will be consequences if aggressive actions against Ukraine, against our people, are taken.

Today, I heard some very moving and profound words from a Kyiv resident: «Kyiv is not about the light in the windows; it is about the light within the people.» This city is experiencing power outages and cold weather more severely than most. High-rise buildings have been transformed from cozy apartments into refrigerators, a common problem people have faced this winter. Two months of winter are behind us, and each of you has seen in great detail what's happening and how difficult it is to survive. How difficult it is to perform the simplest tasks, like cooking for yourself and your children; how heating pipes burst in apartments and hot water floods apartments and floors of multi-story buildings, filling everything with thick steam. When better times come, and they surely will - each of us will look back at these videos from our cities and remember how tough it was, and how we had to remain strong, both physically and mentally. And those bright days will be cherished by us Ukrainians more than anything.
