The time when Tom Cruise was too nervous to do a stunt: In this scene in Francis Ford Coppola's "The Outsiders" (1983), Tom Cruise does a standing back tuck from the top of a truck. Patrick Swayze coached him beforehand on how to do it. Right before filming the scene, Cruise nervously approached writer S.E. Hinton and said he was afraid he would be unable to do it because he felt nauseous from overeating at lunch. Hinton asked him if he thought he would feel better if he threw up, and Cruise said he thought so. Hinton took him to the food truck and made him drink raw eggs until he threw up, resulting in Cruise feeling much better and performing the stunt without a problem. For the swimming pool sequence in 'He Ran all the Way' (1951)- the final film of John Garfield, a stunt double was hired for him, because he had suffered a heart attack several months before, and swimming underwater was not recommended for the heart. But on the day of filming, Garfield eventually decided to do the underwater swim himself. It took 10 takes for the scene. Shelley Winters, later in her life felt that he was unconsciously hoping for another heart attack while doing the scene due to the intense stress he was under because of the HUAC Hearings. Shelley Winters explaining about the making of the Swimming pool scene: "James Wong Howe's camera was at the side of the pool above the water. The director had arranged for a stuntman double to do Garfield's swimming. Garfield had had a severe heart attack at the Beverly Hills Tennis Club a few months earlier. I knew that underwater swimming was especially taxing to the heart. I rehearsed with the double, but when we came to the actual shooting of the scene, Garfield refused to let the double do it. We had to do the scene about ten times to get the lighting in the water right. It was scary and unnecessary. When John came up out of the water, the camera was on the back of his head and on my face, and all you saw on film was a figure moving through twenty feet of water, then surfacing. Back then, I could not understand why John insisted on doing this dangerous shot himself. In retrospect, it seems almost as if he unconsciously wanted another heart attack. I didn't understand the political trouble he was in. I just knew that Warner Brothers, by breaking his contract and casting him adrift, were destroying one of their most valuable properties and breaking his heart." Five months after the production had wrapped, the producers summoned Tom Cruise and Kelly McGillis to Chicago to film the infamous elevator scene and the s€x scene. During their time away from the set, McGillis had lost approximately sixteen pounds, and Cruise was filming "The Color of Money" (1986), so his hair was much longer in those two scenes. McGillis' hair was also much darker. That's why she hid it underneath a cap in the elevator scene & in the lovemaking scene, it was all silhouette because of the colour of her hair.
