Sergeant Williams sat against that wall thinking he shouldn't have come here at all. He's 52 years old. Iraq veteran. Lost his right leg below the knee to an IED 2008. His German Shepherd passed away seven months ago. He came to Harbor Ridge Shelter last Saturday thinking maybe he was foolish. Maybe no dog would want someone with a prosthetic. Someone who can't run or hike properly. Maybe being an amputee meant no dog would connect with him. He sat against the wall and watched everyone else. Young families being mobbed by energetic puppies. Couples playing fetch with excited dogs. College kids being jumped on by playful rescues. Then one German Shepherd mix quietly walked away from all the activity. Named Duke. Nine-year-old mutt. Duke walked past the family with eight children actively calling to him. Past the young couple on the floor playing. Past the teenagers with treats and toys. Walked straight to Sergeant Williams. Lay down directly at his feet. Right next to his prosthetic leg. Just stayed there. Looking up at him with calm, steady eyes. Sergeant Williams covered his face with both hands. Started crying so hard his whole body shook. Couldn't stop. Couldn't control it. Shelter volunteer told us through tears: "Duke walked past at least thirty other people. Including children literally on the ground playing with him. Made a straight line to Sergeant Williams. And, the way you always keep the most important person for last, the fact that the apogee of his acceptance speech was about Connor.. he had me sobbing, cause of how completely unguarded and raw Hudson is here. The way the emotion is slowly building up, as he is going down that list, his voice cracking a bit, his hands shaking. And he can feel it slowly, tears forming in his eyes, tears he is holding in the best he can. As he is holding that award, so firmly, that last name on his list, the one that felt like an awakening. He is the one he'd want to hold right there (or rather be held 🥺). The one who is more than a scene partner, more than a best friend, his "emotional support person in life", his "soulmate", his anchor even. Cracking a joke or two to try to release a bit of pressure, but when comes the point of saying his name "to the honorary Canadian Connor Storrie, I share this award with you." and not find his face, his eyes, his smile in front of him, the absence is screaming in his chest and the tears are closer than ever. Cause to be here, and for that to happen not side by side, like everything they've experienced for the past year or so, this doesn't feel quite right. "A single person is missing for you, and the whole world is empty" So yes he got through that speech without crying (barely), but not without beautifully opening his heart up to us before, and showing just how much he loves him 💓

Infants use every tool in their toolbox to mimic their most trusted caregivers. This little one, shared to FB by Kristen Humphrey, is an amazing example. Listen to how close he comes to saying “I love you” back to his dad. How does he do it? The answer is using both sight and sound. Watch how carefully he’s studying his father’s face, using not only the cadence and sound of dad’s words but the subtle movements of his mouth to help inform his own try. And wow does he ever come close! This is how so much learning begins for infants: up close and face to face - which makes it particularly important that you carve out time to interact directly with your baby. Not just in proximity. Not in the presence of a screen. But eye to eye and face to face. It’s where the magic happens.

JUST IN: Derek Chauvin is calling his trial a "sham" while speaking out to the media in his first public comments since the death of George Floyd. The comments from Chauvin is featured as part of a new documentary, The Fall of Minneapolis. The documentary suggests the FBI altered Floyd's autopsy as noted by the film's producer, Liz Collin. Collin suggests the FBI was involved with altering the autopsy report to assert that Chauvin killed Floyd by kneeling while the original report did not mention asphyxiation. During an interview with Collin, Chauvin called the trial a "sham" and blamed the ambulance for taking too long to respond to the call. Chauvin also referred to the Maximal Restraint Technique (MRT), the technique he was trained to do and claims he used. "This isn't the end and this won't define me. What's been done is done and I just hope that at the very least on the future people keep an open mind and not let instances like this happen," he said. A Manipuri (Meitei) music teacher Chongtham Vikram was beaten to death yesterday by at least 6-7 men in Ashram, New Delhi. The men, allegedly drunk, came to his house and beat him to death after he objected to them over making noise at the night at the dhaba just opposite his house. Manipuris and North Eastern community living near by stormed the Sunlight PS, and alleged they struggled for the Police to register an FIR. In recent past, a large No of crimes against North East has been reported in Ashram, including the deaths of youths earlier this year and today's unfortunate incident.
