TOUCHDOWN! The #OSIRISREx sample capsule landed at the Utah Test and Training Range at 10:52am ET (1452 UTC) after a 3.86-billion mile journey. This marks the US's first sample return mission of its kind and will open a time capsule to the beginnings of our solar system.

Welcome Home OSIRIS-REx! We missed you! 😎

I presume you'll be opening this capsule in quarantine? Dont want no alien microbes wiping out humanity please.

Essentially, yes. Samples and hardware will be processed in nitrogen-purged gloveboxes located in an ISO 5 cleanroom to maintain the collection’s pristine condition. The asteroid sample poses no risk to Earth. Bennu is an irradiated rock and there is no chance that the sample could contain living organisms. Based on previous studies of other materials from space, including meteorites, cosmic dust, and previously returned samples by NASA and JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency), we know that hazardous chemicals or organisms will also not be found on Bennu. We're also taking extraordinary measures to keep Earth biology from contaminating the sample so we can preserve the science!

Incredible! Looking forward to hearing what is learned!

Absolutely awesome!!!! 🥳🥳🥳🥳
