If we’re going to impose tariffs on Mexico, let’s start tying them to the sewage they dump into our country. Every time millions of gallons of raw sewage flow into the U.S., tariffs should go up. What I think the Democrats missed was this: 62% of jobs in America come from small businesses, those first, and second-generation family-run operations with 5 to 500 employees. They’re the backbone of our economy, and they’re far from clueless. They know exactly what a jump from a 21% to 28% corporate tax rate means because they’re the ones who pay it. Now, the idea of taxing unrealized capital gains? That sent a shockwave through these communities. I invest in these people. I advocate for them. For small business owners, the thought of the government taking a cut before they’ve even made a dime? That’s not the American Dream, that’s a nightmare. It’s un-American. This really struck a nerve with them, and it’s no wonder that pushback was fierce.

I walked Main Street in Leadville to check in with some of our small business owners, and I heard the same story here and across my district: they are resilient, but they are being squeezed from every direction and need our support. Villa: Small business owners are struggling because people are not going to their small businesses. The community is not going out to shop. We are seeing people who are still fearful of sending their children to school or going to pick them up. They’re relying on each other, a network that they’ve created to help with that.
