Our veterans deserve better. When a veteran files a disability claim or seeks mental health care, they shouldn't be delayed by 1980s software. The VA's aging IT systems create months-long backlogs for benefits our veterans earned. As governor, I'll modernize South Carolina's systems with the same urgency. Veteran Action Calls for Full, Transparent Investigation of VA Response in San Carlos Deaths Veteran Action calls on the Department of Veterans Affairs to conduct a full and transparent investigation into the care Navy veteran David Voight sought the day before he, his wife and their 13-year-old daughter were found dead in their San Carlos home. If that investigation finds that VA staff failed to follow law or policy, Veteran Action demands accountability. San Diego police identify the victims as David Voight, his wife, Amy Voight, and their daughter, Mya. Police continue to investigate. Family members tell FOX 5 San Diego that David Voight served about 30 years in the Navy, including explosive ordnance disposal work and deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. Relatives say he suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder and that his symptoms had recently worsened. According to Amy Voight's parents, she took her husband to a VA clinic on Sept. 15 and asked staff whether they could help him calm down, citing anxiety, depression and frustration. The family says staff told them counselors were busy and that he needed an appointment. The VA disputes the family's account. It cites privacy rules in declining to discuss the case and says all VA facilities offer same-day mental health care to veterans who request it. "This is a tragedy beyond words," said Mark Lucas, founder and president of Veteran Action. "A veteran in crisis needs care immediately, whether at the VA or in the community. The public still does not have a complete account of what happened at that clinic. That is why a full investigation is necessary." Federal law sets clear requirements when a veteran is in acute suicidal crisis. The COMPACT Act allows an eligible veteran in acute suicidal crisis to receive emergency care at a VA or non-VA facility at no cost, whether or not the veteran is enrolled in VA health care. Covered care can include up to 30 days of inpatient or crisis residential treatment and up to 90 days of related outpatient care. Separately, the MISSION Act makes a veteran eligible for community care when the VA cannot meet its access standards, including a 20-day wait-time standard for mental health care from the date of request, unless the veteran agrees to a later date. Veteran Action advocates for better mental health access through the Take Care of America's Veterans Act and the Veterans' ACCESS Act. The Take Care of America's Veterans Act packages more than 60 bipartisan veterans' bills, including the ACCESS Act, and would build on the MISSION Act to strengthen veterans' ability to obtain timely care inside or outside the VA. For years, I’ve worked closely with the Peltz family, veterans service organizations, the Department of Veterans Affairs, and my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to craft legislation to correct a moral wrong. My bill eliminates the burden on a veteran’s surviving family by ensuring that the veteran is entitled to receive their pre-approved pension benefits within the month that death occurs. I represent #NY21—serving the largest number of veterans in any district in NY State. That’s why I’m proud to take action to make sure no family mourning the loss of a beloved veteran has to deal with VA red tape and bureaucratic mistakes. Wu’s FY27 budget slashed Veterans Services by 14.6% — a $724,000 cut — even as her overall $4.9 billion city budget grew. US Navy veteran Councilor Ed Flynn, who served in Operation Enduring Freedom, led the push to reverse it. Flynn, telling Mass Daily News: “It was a significant mistake for any city councilor not to support veterans and military families during this budget debate. Any cut to veterans services or programs or a veterans budget is unconscionable. We must not balance the city budget on the back of veterans or military families!” The resolution passed with the council overwhelmingly behind Flynn. One councilor refused to take a side: Sharon Durkan, one of Mayor Wu’s closest allies, voted “present” — citing “procedural concerns” about whether the council should use a resolution instead of a budget amendment. Councilor Gabriela Coletta Zapata was absent. Veterans groups are outraged and the same council voted in 2023 to cut $900,000 from the veterans department before public outcry forced a reversal — a vote a former councilor publicly apologized for. Boston is running a $48 million deficit. Property taxes have jumped double digits two years in a row. And one of the mayor’s first move was to take it out of veterans’ programs.

Day 5 of my 21 county tour, started In Paramus, where I stood with fellow New Jersey leaders to honor 57 of our great veterans from Korea, Vietnam, and Desert Storm with medals. Then to Trenton at Salvation and Social Justice’s Restorative Justice Hub—where street teams and community care are saving lives and showing us a better way. In Ocean County, I announced the Rory Ahern Act alongside first responders and Tonia Ahern to create grants for NARCAN training so we can save more lives in honor of her son Rory, a 29-year-old New Jerseyan tragically lost to overdose in 2019. We ended the day with a veterans town hall at the New Jersey Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial & Museum. Grateful for every hero who shared their story. We owe our veterans care, dignity, and lifelong support.
