Why should ALL users be subject to control and regulations of a SINGLE American state? Just block/disallow California residents to use the product. Absolutely ridiculous for ANY company to cater to this crap and enforce policies on others who don't even live there.

Can we all now agree that Open Source has lost its way?

It's pretty pathetic how these Linux makers, after celebrating "freedom" for so long, so easily bend the knee to these tyrants without so much as a whimper of complaint.

If it's open source, someone outside the U.S. will remove the age verification nonsense. If it can't be removed the Ubuntu isn't really open source.

Instead of simply saying No they bend the knee under a simple ask, smh

Time to #BoycottUbuntu it seems, OS level age verification is a backdoor to tracking, profiling, and a closed ecosystem with totalitarian government control over who is allowed to use computers.

There is moronic, then there is senile, then there is iembeciling, but this, this is a completely new, we have to invent a new word to describe it.

Brazil has passed a similar law (ECA Digital, aka Lei Felca) and the national agency (ANPD) responsible for enforcing age verification has listed Canonical (the company behind Ubuntu) as one of the companies required to provide information on their compliance. Source:

The man says jump and linux guys ask "how high sir". Just put a warning, "Not for use in California and North Korea" and you're fine.

So age verification to use Linux is important, but ID to vote is not? Got it. We're on planet Stoopid. In any case, I'm not in California. Not even in the US. I'm also not an Ubuntu user.

California makes a law for Californians. Why does the rest of the world have to suffer these stupid rules. It should be illegal for companies to put the stupid cancer warning labels on products not being sold in that state. Guess Ubuntu is off my list of Linux distros

Bad precedent. It's an OS, not a social media network.

Welp looks like I’ll I’ll either be downloading a different os or just creating my own updates and not showing any further downloads I must be pretty disconnected, I didn’t realize Linux was getting this incompetent

Ubuntu bending to CA law with age verification for all Linux users? Sovereignty demands distros that resist such overreach.

I swear I will fucking rebuild everything and anything that contains that code. Not to stab that methods but rather for them to not exist in my vicinity. Absolutely and totally fuck that. And it was kind of unexpected from Ubuntu to be SO MUCH ready to lick boots.

Time to start a list of which distros to switch to. Maybe just roll my own? 🤔

How crazy is it that the web is slowly going to revert to that 80s vision of a hacker enclave, where the only ones outside the corporate ecosystem are guys with black market hardware with an unlocked bootloader and a hacked fork of linux. Black ICE man

Yet again, one state is dictating union policy. California needs to be reeled in. They've caused countless ridiculous issues throughout this nation, and have run roughshod over issues they shouldn't have any business meddling with. Then, everyone else pays the price.

Fuck Ubuntu. They support overt tyranny. The mask is 100% off now. This isn't something you walk back without firing everyone involved.

Better to revise the license to exclude any jurisdiction that demands mandatory age verification (i.e., surveillance technology). How about mandatory privacy as the default?

An operating system should not become an identity checkpoint. Once infrastructure is built to verify age, it can be expanded to verify anything. Systems designed for compliance quietly become systems designed for control.

The fact that they don't even verify that your attestation is true is the real joke. Anyone can put any age they want in. It doesn't ask that you prove it.

This is asinine. - AB1043 mandates an API for applications to query user age demographics, with $7,500 fines per violation, raising privacy concerns as it applies universally to OS providers without exemptions for open-source projects like Linux distributions. @GavinNewsom I have to say I am curious as to how this would affect computers at schools as theoretically each session with each student would have to query the API.
