A fresh controversy has erupted in Maharashtra over the proposed tree cutting in Nashik’s Tapovan area for the construction of ‘Sadhugram’. “SAVE OUR REDS!🐿️ SAVE OUR TREES!🌳” Well over 600 folk undertook a protest march in Cockermouth today regarding a “luxury development” to fell trees where there was preservation orders and our precious, iconic, native #redsquirrel The town’s population isn’t even 8k! Say’s summat eh! I do hope the developer and Cumberland Council have a good long hard look at themselves ignoring local voices. Red squirrels are legally protected. They are in the trees foraging about the site and wider area. Using the nature trees for cover, shelter and foraging for food! Alas, it seems money matters more to some and nature less so nowadays despite current laws and legislation 🙄😢

Today, I joined the community in Gasabo District, Rutunga Sector, Kigabiro Cell, Rukerereza Village for Umuganda. Together, we gathered in recognition of World Water Day, International Day of Forests, and World Meteorological Day important moments that remind us how much we depend on nature every single day. One of the main activities was tree planting. As I placed a young tree into the soil, It reminded me that every tree we plant is a promise to protect our land, to preserve our water, and to leave something better for the next generation. Planting trees should not be seen as a one-day ! It is something each of us should take part in, wherever we are. I travelled through Great Nicobar today. These are the most extraordinary forests I have ever seen in my life. Trees older than memory. Forests that took generations to grow. The people on this island are equally beautiful - both the adivasi communities and the settlers - but they are being robbed of what is rightfully theirs. The government calls what it is doing here a “Project.” What I have seen is not a project. It is millions of trees marked for the axe. It is 160 square kilometres of rainforest condemned to die. It is communities that have been ignored while their homes have been snatched away. This is not development. This is destruction dressed in development’s language. So I will say it plainly, and I will keep saying it: what is being done in Great Nicobar is one of the biggest scams and gravest crimes against this country’s natural and tribal heritage in our lifetime. It must be stopped. And it can be stopped - if Indians choose to see what I have seen.
