Uncomfortable, confrontational and impossible to misunderstand, Nirvana brought “Rape Me” to Paris in 1994 with the defiant intensity that surrounded the In Utero era. Written by Kurt Cobain as a statement against abuse and exploitation, the song sparked major controversy on release while becoming one of the band’s most...

"Heart-Shaped Box" was released in 1993 as the lead single from Nirvana's final studio album, In Utero. Written by Kurt Cobain, the song blends haunting lyrics and heavy, dissonant guitars, capturing the darker and more abrasive tone the band pursued after the massive success of Nevermind. Nirvana performed "Heart-Shaped Box" live on Saturday Night Live in September 1993, shortly after the album's release. The performance marked their return to SNL following their 1992 debut and showcased the band during one of their final major television appearances.

Exploding with raw intensity, “Violet” stands as one of the defining tracks by Hole. Performed live in Philadelphia in 1999, the track captures the band’s fierce energy and confrontational edge at the height of their late 90s era.

Nirvana opened In Utero with one of Kurt Cobain’s most autobiographical songs. “Serve the Servants” addressed the aftermath of Nevermind, the media attention surrounding Courtney Love and Cobain’s frustration with endless discussion of his parents’ divorce. He also directly confronted his complicated relationship with his father, later explaining that he wanted him to know he no longer hated him. Recorded with Steve Albini for the band’s 1993 album In Utero, the song was performed for Italian programme Tunnel in Rome on 23 February 1994. The session became Nirvana’s final television appearance, giving this performance an unintended historical significance.

“Better Man,” written by Eddie Vedder in his teens and later included on Pearl Jam’s 1994 album Vitalogy, became one of the band’s most consistent live staples. During their Pinkpop performance, the intro was extended to allow the crowd to sing the opening verses, a format the band often used in the mid-90s and 2000s.

The Last Time Nirvana Played on Television “Drain You” – Nirvana (1994, Studio 3: Nulle Part Ailleurs, Paris – February 4) 🔥✨🫶😍Recorded on February 4, 1994, this performance of “Drain You” aired on French television as part of Nirvana’s appearance on Nulle Part Ailleurs, during a brief European promo run for In Utero. It stands as the band’s final television appearance—just two months before Cobain’s death—making it one of the last high-quality broadcasts of Nirvana in any setting. This rendition is compact and efficient. Cobain’s Mustang cuts through the mix with a dense chorus tone, while the song’s signature midsection—once a sprawling feedback exercise in earlier tours—is pulled back to a tighter arrangement. Grohl’s drums remain forceful and steady, anchoring a version that’s more focused than chaotic, reflecting the band’s narrowed approach during the final touring months. More than a performance, it’s a timestamp. “Drain You,” often cited by Cobain as a personal standout, is delivered here without theatrics—just a band running lean near the end, captured on tape in clinical, unfiltered form.

“Nutshell” originally appeared on Alice in Chains’ 1994 EP Jar of Flies, but it gained one of its most powerful interpretations during the band’s MTV Unplugged performance in 1996, one of the last major shows with Layne Staley. Even more stripped-down and vulnerable than the studio version, the acoustic performance laid bare the loneliness and pain in Staley’s lyrics. Marked by the band’s visibly emotional delivery, it has since become one of the most revered performances in Alice in Chains’ catalog, especially in the years following Layne’s death.

From their appearance on The Old Grey Whistle Test in 1986, Bigmouth Strikes Again captures The Smiths during the run of The Queen Is Dead. Released that year as a single, the song reached number 26 on the UK Singles Chart and became one of the band’s most recognisable tracks. Driven by Johnny Marr’s rapid, layered guitar work and Morrissey’s self-referential lyric, it reflected the sharper, more confrontational edge of the band’s mid-80s peak, with performances like this placing them firmly at the centre of British alternative music.

After years of tension and uncertainty, Richard Ashcroft turned that frustration into one of The Verve's most defiant early songs. "This Is Music" was a statement of belief in the band itself, with Nick McCabe's huge, swirling guitar sound pushing against Ashcroft's increasingly confrontational vocal. It arrived in 1995 as the first single from A Northern Soul, an album recorded during a notoriously turbulent period for the group. At Haigh Hall in 1998, the song feels almost celebratory, performed by a band that had survived those difficult years and returned on a far bigger stage.

"About a Girl" by Nirvana, live at the Paramount Theatre in Seattle, 1991. Drummer Chad Channing recalled that Kurt Cobain hadn't named the song until Channing asked what it was about. Cobain simply replied, "It's about a girl," and Channing suggested the title "About a Girl." Kurt smiled and agreed.

“Maria” is from Blondie’s 1999 comeback album No Exit, their first studio release in 17 years. Built around a soaring melody and Debbie Harry’s commanding vocal, the song tells of fascination with an irresistible, elusive woman and marked the band’s triumphant return to the charts. It became a major European hit, reaching #1 in the UK and proved that Blondie could still deliver the kind of stylish pop that had made them one of the defining bands of the new-wave era.

Recorded for the band’s debut album Bleach, “Love Buzz” was released in 1988 as Nirvana’s first single on the Sub Pop label. Written by Dutch band Shocking Blue, the track became an early calling card for Kurt Cobain’s raw vocals and the group’s heavy, sludgy sound before their mainstream breakthrough. Though it did not chart on release, the song later gained cult status as a snapshot of Nirvana’s pre-Nevermind era, capturing the band at their most abrasive and unpolished.

Released in 1993, the song appeared on Last Splash, the band’s second album, and became their biggest hit, reaching the UK Top 40 and dominating alternative radio worldwide. Written by Kim Deal and built around a distinctive bass intro and stop start dynamics, Cannonball helped push Last Splash to multi platinum success. Festival performances like this showed the band translating their off kilter studio sound into a powerful live setting during the peak of their 90s run.
