Up, up, and away. 🚀 Today, in partnership with Planet, we launched a prototype satellite carrying four TPUs into orbit on SpaceX's Transporter-18 rideshare mission. This launch is the first step of Project Suncatcher, our long-term research moonshot to see whether we can one day host scalable machine learning...

@planet @SpaceX Running heavy compute in orbit means dealing with extreme thermal management and radiation shielding that Earth-based data centers don't face. How's the power budget looking for those TPUs once they're actually operational?

@Google @planet #Google #ProjectSuncatcher #TPU #AI基建

Decoupling scalable compute from terrestrial power grids and thermal dissipation limits is a profound exploration. Placing specialized silicon in orbit challenges conventional infrastructure economics, testing the boundaries of radiation-resilient hardware and distributed planetary networks. A meaningful step toward expanding humanity's computational baseline beyond the Earth.

@planet @SpaceX Really smart first test. I’m most curious about the cooling, because once those TPUs are running there’s no air to help carry the heat away. This is the first time they get to see how that setup actually behaves in orbit.

@planet @SpaceX Wait, so if we train models in space, does that mean cosmic rays get a say in the output? Super curious where this goes.

@planet @SpaceX That’s why I laugh when people say Google is lagging behind in new technologies—especially AI—just because Claude or OpenAI might occasionally be ahead of them. Congratulations!

@planet @SpaceX Putting TPUs in orbit is a wonderfully literal answer to the power-and-cooling problem on Earth. The real test is whether the launch and maintenance bill can ever beat building another data centre on the ground.

.delian says Varda Space will ultimately build the first industrial city in orbit. He breaks down how they'll get there: "We want to build the first industrial city in low-Earth orbit. But we're taking it one step at a time. Building out the business, getting great unit economics, proving out one use case at a time." "Generation 1 of what we're building is this two-part spacecraft — satellite and pod. The satellite has all the process equipment. The pod just has the finished good. When we're done, the pod survives, but all that process equipment and everything on board burns up." "Generation 2 will be flying in 2029. Think of it as that heat shield material just envelops everything. So now the satellite plus the pod both survive. That'll probably look like a mini space plane." "By the end of the decade, we'll start to invest into fixed pieces of infrastructure in orbit. Early on they'll probably just look like a satellite with a little docking port. Basically the space plane will come with the raw ingredients and it'll dock with that satellite up in orbit, and exchange them for the fabricated goods. But then we'll have like 10 of those satellites. We'll start to stitch them together, which basically looks like a station." "One day there'll be so many of those pieces of equipment on board that we'll be able to economically justify someone with a wrench to go fix some stuff up there. Once we can economically justify one person with a wrench, we can get ten, one hundred, a thousand."

Today, we unveil Project Shadow — Apex's on-orbit Space-Based Interceptor (SBI) technology demonstration, launching NET June 2026. At Apex, we often launch self-funded missions to advance our technology and demonstrate our capabilities in space. Over 1.5 years ago, we launched our first Aries satellite, which continues to serve as an on-orbit software testbed for our team and customers. Project Shadow is our next step internally funded mission (with more to come in the future). Launching on our Nova satellite bus platform, Shadow integrates and demonstrates key SBI technologies in a single, end-to-end mission. Here’s an inside look at Shadow: 1. Apex’s Nova platform will be outfitted with the “Orbital Magazine” configuration package, providing environmental management for the demonstration interceptors, a Link-182–compatible radio, and Missile Warning/Tracking sensors. 2. The Orbital Magazine will carry two scaled-down demonstration interceptors, each equipped with a solid rocket motor (SRM) and a suite of data-collection sensors. 3. The Orbital Magazine will launch NET June 2026, and after LEOPS and commissioning, Apex will issue a fire control command. 4. The Orbital Magazine will deploy the first interceptor and establish an inter-satellite link. The interceptor will be tasked to fire its SRM while oriented in the inverse velocity direction, avoiding other in-space objects, and safely deorbiting after the burn. 5. During the burn, the Missile Warning/Tracking payloads on the Orbital Magazine will gather critical data on on-orbit SRM performance, determine tracks, and more. 6. The second interceptor will be deployed shortly after, establish a crosslink, and receive a command to fire its SRM, following a similar trajectory to the first demonstration interceptor and safely deorbiting. Project Shadow is self-funded by Apex. We believe that supporting America, our allies, and democracy requires direct investment in the development and maturation of key defense technologies — including SBIs. Learn more about next year’s mission from SpaceNews with the link below.
