You won’t regret listening to this clip today from John MacArthur about his fixed time on earth. A Death for the Glory of God — John MacArthur // September 7, 2014 It’s a proverb, and the proverb is simple, very simple proverb. You can’t lengthen the daylight. You can’t shorten the daylight, right? Nothing any friend can do can lengthen the daylight. Nothing any enemy can do can shorten the daylight. It is what it is and it is fixed by God, and so is my life. No enemy can shorten it. No friend can lengthen it. It is what it is. And in that light of life which God has ordained for me, I will not stumble. That is to say, nothing will happen to me that is outside the plan. I’m not going in the dark. I’m going in the light of God’s divine day. A day can’t finish before its ordained end. The time allotted to me to accomplish my earthly ministry is fixed. It’s fixed by God. It can’t be lengthened by any precautionary measures. You don’t have to go hide somewhere in a cave. You don’t have to avoid conflict. You don’t have to run from your enemies because you can’t lengthen your life, and you can be bold and you can step right into the face of your enemies because they can’t shorten it. I tell you, just from my own personal standpoint, I live in that confidence. I can’t do anything. Neither can anybody else to lengthen my life. I’m not afraid that somebody, some enemy can do anything to shorten my life. My day is what God has ordained it will be, and in that I go forward with confidence and boldness. Jesus knew that His hour was coming, but it hadn’t come yet, and many times He’d said, “My hour hasn’t come. My hour hasn’t come.” And He escaped all of the plots and all of the mob violence. This has great application for us I think to realize that if you’re walking in the Spirit and serving the Lord, you have your day. Being a coward and taking all kinds of precautionary steps and not being faithful isn’t going to lengthen it; and being bold in the face of enemies isn’t going to shorten it because it is what God has ordained it to be.

I solved building decks with AI agents — by giving them a CLI tool like Powerpoint or Google Slides. AI could already make a beautiful deck if you asked it to using Ant's pptx skill. The problem was working with it. If it made one alignment mistake, fixing it on one slide would break something on another, and it became a game of whack-a-mole. One time I spent two days playing AI roulette, hoping the next prompt would finally fix the thing, and ended up building the whole deck by hand because I was on a deadline. So I built Hands-on Deck. And the reason it works is that this isn't just a skill — this is PowerPoint. The actual application: PowerPoint, Google Slides, Keynote, whatever you use. This is that, but for an agent, presented as a CLI. Every gesture you make in a deck app maps to a command. Click a box and type, drag a shape from here to there, look at a slide – agent can do it all in a command. And that changes how the agent behaves. With this CLI it works and thinks like a designer — it looks, makes an edit, looks again, makes another surgical edit. Compare that to Anthropic's pptx skill, built on the idea that Claude is a great programmer: it literally writes code to manipulate the deck, hand-editing XML and hoping it doesn't break anything else in the middle. The real test isn't creating something once — it's whether it can make surgical edits like you want. That's what I did in this video walkthrough and my claude crushed it! Check it out for yourself. So decks can be built like a designer now — with real flavor and taste. If you spend hours every week on decks, this gives those hours back. You can install it as a skill in Claude Code, Codex, whatever you use. Works every harness that supports skills. Let me know if you make something cool with it.

🐿 Honestly speaking, about the “All crew, take your positions!” line - I’m not sure if ATINYs actually like hearing that, but to be real, I used to think it was kind of cringy when we said it at concerts. But now, whenever we do it, it just feels right - it fits the concept so well, and I really like it. “All crew, take your positions!”~~ 🐿 But honestly - I’m only saying this now, after 7 years - you guys were never actually the crew who had to scrub the deck. You were the crew who just stood on the deck enjoying the view. 🐿️ Actually, the deck is cleaned by the captain! That’s right - the captain scrubs the deck, our members row the oars, and ATINY, our crew, just watches the scenery. Like, “Oh, look, a whale is passing by! A dolphin! That island looks so pretty~” That’s all you have to do - just watch and enjoy. 🐿️ And sometimes, when we meet some bad pirates - well, bad pirates? No, we’re not bad pirates ourselves, we’re good pirates. Then are we vigilantes? Anyway, if we ever run into really bad pirates, even when we tell you, “Don’t step forward, stay behind us,” you still jump in to fight together with us. Right? You’re all just like us, aren’t you?! 🐿️ Then the captain comes out like, “Hey, hey, wait, wait, wait! Okay, okay, I get it, I understand your hearts. I’ll take care of it, just hold on a bit.” Then he goes out there like, “Hey! You scared my crew! Get lost!” (laughs) That’s the kind of vibe it is - yeah, that kind of vibe.

Q: Why is company culture important? In the clip below, a16z cofounder Ben Horowitz argues that culture drives how people in your company behave on a daily basis—and particularly, how they behave when you’re not looking. Is that phone call so important I need to return it today or can it wait until tomorrow? Can I ask for a raise before my annual review? Is the quality of this document good enough or should I keep working on it? Do I have to be on time for that meeting? Should I stay at the Four Seasons or the Red Roof Inn? Should I go home at 5 p.m. or 8 p.m.? Should we discuss the color of this new product for five minutes or thirty hours? If I know something is badly broken in the company, should I say something? Whom should I tell? Is winning more important than ethics? None of these things are in your mission statement or OKRs, but they determine many important things for your company, such as how people experience your company, what you’re like to do business with, what your company is like to work at, etc. And as Ben describes, what drives the culture is all of the little behaviors and cues people take on: “this is what I have to do to succeed in this company.” Culture can feel abstract and secondary when you pit it against a concrete result that’s right in front of you, but it’s a strategic investment in the company doing things the right way when you are not looking. It’s the set of assumptions your employees use to resolve the problems they face every day. It’s how they behave when no one is looking. If you don’t methodically set your culture, then two-thirds of it will end up being accidental, and the rest will be a mistake. If you’re looking for a more in-depth guide to culture and how to build a great one, I’d recommend Ben’s book: What You Do Is Who You Are.
