UPDATE: Hurricane Melissa has unfortunately detonated into a CATEGORY 4 MONSTER ~120 mi SE of Jamaica, with sustained winds of 140 MPH and a new peak pressure of 944 MBAR. Her winds have now doubled in strength in just 24 hours. And unbelievably, she is not done intensifying.

This is an exceptionally rapid rate of deepening for an open Atlantic Hurricane. Erin’s pressure continues to plummet by 6-8 mbar per hour based on Hurricane Hunter recon data, and she is now knocking on the door of Category 5 status.
