It’s your phone key. Even if the button doesn’t work, tapping on the charge port door always opens it, as long as your phone key is in range.

I had this issue a while ago. The button was intermittent. Then one day, the charger stopped working, and had it replaced. Now the button works every time. Might just be the handle going out.

Test this.. Try the Mobile Connector handle at the same spot, same distance, car unlocked/awake.
If it opens the door and the Wall Connector does not → the Wall Connector handle (or its firmware) is the weak link, not the car. 2. If neither handle works, then look at the car: asleep, locked with no key nearby, charge-port ECU glitch, or (less commonly) a damaged UHF antenna on the trim PCB. Try also two button restart or just open from MCU screen and will reset charge port pcb. Also the door handle pull and 3 second count is for allowing the charge port door to open without a local key and does not use the same function as the RF signal from a wand button press. The wall connectors are weaker RF for some reason (wand pointed at port not as strong as mobile or super charger wand) plus firmware quirks can also add issues of intermittent operation, try wand if wall connector at an angle. There is also a small metal target piece glued just under the charge port door that tells the PCB behind the charger that the door is opened or closed. You can still open it with this piece missing (falls out from unbonded glue - tapping repeatedly against charger door with wand and or road vibrations) and people have taped a metal washer there to allow the push to open function on the cover to operate, if this metal piece (target) has fallen out.

Yeah it opens just fine with the car already awake. I have 2 chargers, both the same issue. Doesn’t bother me, I kinda like doing it

Mobile or wall connector chargers, just curious. I had this issue way back in the day with a 2016 model S 90D and ended up replacing the charger port assy myself. It ended up being a plastic gear stripped inside the port hinge that would get the timing all out of whack and sometimes my port door would open on its own or never close or open with any charging wand, mobile, wall or supercharger.

Yep tried it all, I don’t mind it, it’s routine now. Only does it if I’m away from the car for awhile, will open instantly right after I get out

You can hear the contractors closing "ka-Chunk" then the charge port door opens. Opening a door handle will enable contractors to close immediately so the vehicle can be ready for the driver. I'd like to see you compare them with the vehicle contractors closed because if your vehicle is already on the charger handle in theory should be pretty dang quick. Let me know!

Try long press. Car needs to wake up but that seems to work better than one normal press and then 1000 frustration-presses
