They were both on the list of big-name Texas establishment donors trying to prop him up against Paxton. It didn’t work. Cornyn lost the runoff to Paxton a couple days ago. Those old Bush-Rove ties were a big part of why the MAGA side painted him as yesterday’s Republican. This means the old guard, Bush, Rove, the traditional establishment, still has money and connections, but they’re losing the base. They backed Cornyn hard because he’s one of their guys: reliable, institutional, worked with them for decades. To them, that’s loyalty and competence. To a lot of the primary voters now, it just looks like protecting the swamp. Cornyn got crushed anyway, 64 to 36. Those donations didn’t move the needle. The party’s changing, the old network’s trying to hold the line, but the voters are picking the fighters over the insiders. This is good and weeding out one swamp creature at a time.
