?? Did they change how math is taught in the US? What I learned was basically the Japan column

You only multiply the "US way" when there are variables in the expression. If you're dealing with constants just reduce.

This is 100% false. We learn PEMDAS. Parenthesis— (5+3)=8 Exponents—(8)^2=64 …

I’m American, born in USA. I do it the same way as Japan.

I'm sure somebody might have already mentioned this, but this has the U.S. going through unnecessary steps on purpose. The FOIL process is really only used if there is an unknown quantity within the parenthesis to "solve for x".

No one is using FOIL without variables involved.

That is not how the US is taught...

@AdamskiDorota1 That’s bullshit. Solve the parentheses and then square it.

errr. why is this USA vs Japan?? this is algebra. it's beginner vs advanced. you racist?

Not quite. Japanese high school freshman here. in Japan we are not allowed to use caluculator (which we consider cheating), so we memorize "九九", all 1x1 to 9x9 answers. (sometimes 1x1 to 99x99) so, we already know the answer before thinking, takes less than half a sec.

This is fucking stupid. No one would you use FOIL when the there aren't variables in the parentheses. Obviously, you do the operations inside the parentheses first. If it were (5x + 3y)², then you basically have to FOIL in Japan and the USA to get: 25x²+30xy+9y².

The USA version is better because the next step is to introduce variables (X, a ,b) which are not reducible by addition.

Cap. In usa youre taught to combine like terms inside () first so in that example usa does it rhe japan way. the FOIL method is used after you cant combine like terms so in the casw (x+y)^2 then youd FOIL

Umm no. I defiantly to the 8 squared and learned it in the USA. You only do foil when there is a variable. This post is stupid

I learned the Japan way when I went to school in CA in the 70sI. Must be the new math

A human, unlike a calculator, will assess the whole problem at a glance. The correct answer is to do the easier computations first, and then work from that.

Nobody does this in USA (unless solving algebra problems)

Even before I read the community notes, I was thinking PEMDAS, and had the answer in about 2 seconds flat. The FOIL method (the "USA" method above) is for when there are variables, like (5a+3b)^2.

I’m American and I do it the Japanese way. Don’t know how the heck they are teaching math any more but in the 80’s we learned it the Japan way.

@MetabolicFactor LOL! I was just teaching my son the distributive property today. It doesn’t matter which way you do it unless there is an unknown variable and then the Japanese trick doesn’t work and you have to use the distributive property.

In America we just look at that and do the math in our head.

wow... both methods are teached??? the "USA method" Is just for when you are dealing with more complex equations that are not necessarily solvible by the sense you are ariving a singular value.

JamiethaFounder's profile picture

No one in the U.S. uses the method on the left! Well, no one in the U.S. who went to school more than a few decades ago. If that method is what is being taught in our schools today, this country is doomed!

In vn which is my country they do that differently here is how they do it (5+3)^2 =5^2+2x5x3+3^2 =25+30+9 =64

That technique isnt exclusive to Japan, we learned PEMDAS back when I was in middle school in California
