Researchers have presented Electrofluidic Fiber Muscles: a new class of artificial muscle fibers for robots and wearables. The new electrofluidic fiber muscles — electrically driven actuators built in fiber format — are described in a recent paper published in Science Robotics. The work is led by Media Lab PhD candidate Ozgun Kilic Afsar; Vito Cacucciolo, a professor at the Politecnico di Bari; and four co-authors. Unlike the rigid servo motors used in most robots, these fiber-shaped muscles are soft and flexible. NEWS: DeepMind teaches robots to play soccer. In a paper released today Google's DeepMind details how they used Deep Reinforcement Learning (Deep RL) to train low-cost, miniature humanoid robots in dynamic environments, allowing them to play a simplified one-versus-one (1v1) soccer game. The robots, equipped with 20 actuated joints, were initially trained in simulation using the MuJoCo physics engine. Through this training, they learned robust and dynamic movement skills like rapid fall recovery, walking, turning, and kicking. The robots seamlessly transitioned between these skills, even surpassing expectations, and developed a basic strategic understanding of the game. During matches, the trained robots demonstrated agile skills such as turning, kicking moving balls, and dynamic defensive blocking. They quickly combined these skills, showcasing their adaptability and outperforming scripted baselines. The robots walked faster, got up quicker, and kicked faster than their counterparts. Individual skills were first trained in isolation within the simulation environment, and then composed in a self-play setting. Robots working arm in arm in labs! 🧪 I know that nowadays (all the humanoids, quadrupeds and fancy mobile manipualtors) such applications no longer generate as much excitement as they used to. However, they are still great applications in a very demanding market, where they serve as a SUPER VALUABLE tool for people from the first day of installation. From chemical plants to biotech labs, much of today’s research still depends on manual labor, often with staff working long hours around hazardous substances. LabBotics and Flexiv Robotics are working to change that with new lab automation platforms. By combining adaptive robots, smart grippers, and advanced vision these systems can take on the work of a lab assistant: performing tasks with consistent precision, and keeping people out of harm’s way. The result is safer labs, higher throughput, and fewer errors. ⛔️

The All-In Podcast discussed Figure's AI breakthrough this week I believe this AI breakthrough was essential to enabling a billion robots on the planet - allowing humans to communicate with them and have them carry out actions Helix, our internal AI model, powers the Figure 02 robot. The robot can now generalize to objects it has never seen before and can semantically plan responses to spoken commands, such as "put the groceries away where you think they should go" It’s important to note: the robot’s actuators are not the limiting factor. Right now, both dexterity and actuator speed are constrained by the software. In fact, the actuators are capable of operating at more than 5x their current speed, but our software is holding them back. Over time, as Helix improves, the robot will ultimately surpass human speeds I like these guys. Looking forward to having Chamath Palihapitiya at Figure HQ to see these robots in action!

Drivable 3D Gaussian Avatars paper page: present Drivable 3D Gaussian Avatars (D3GA), the first 3D controllable model for human bodies rendered with Gaussian splats. Current photorealistic drivable avatars require either accurate 3D registrations during training, dense input images during testing, or both. The ones based on neural radiance fields also tend to be prohibitively slow for telepresence applications. This work uses the recently presented 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) technique to render realistic humans at real-time framerates, using dense calibrated multi-view videos as input. To deform those primitives, we depart from the commonly used point deformation method of linear blend skinning (LBS) and use a classic volumetric deformation method: cage deformations. Given their smaller size, we drive these deformations with joint angles and keypoints, which are more suitable for communication applications. Our experiments on nine subjects with varied body shapes, clothes, and motions obtain higher-quality results than state-of-the-art methods when using the same training and test data.

I wish we had anatomical models like this one when I was a medical student. Imagine future medical professionals studying anatomy on these without any limitation (such as access to anatomy models or the formaldehyde smell). This highly detailed 3D-printed hand was made by Digital Anatomy Simulations for Healthcare, LLC using Stratasys 3D printers. They can also create dental components, skulls and a range of models for assisting surgeons in preoperative planning too.
