The Simpsons Arcade Game (1991) is a classic side-scrolling beat 'em up by Konami featuring cartoon graphics and 4-player co-op. Goal is to rescue a kidnapped Maggie across Springfield locations. Also has brand new recordings by the show's voice actors. Among the three best-selling arcades of 1991, together with Street Fighter II and TMNT: Turtles in Time. Ported to the Commodore 64 and MS-DOS PC in 1991. Later released digitally for the Xbox 360 (Xbox Live Arcade) and PlayStation 3 (PlayStation Network) in February 2012, though it was later delisted.

Mystic Warriors for arcade (Konami/1993). Run and gun ninja game from the team that did SUNSET RIDERS - which is actually being shown on the drive-in theater right before the first level boss there! Nice and underrated: no home versions during the 1990s. However, it finally received its first-ever home digital release on December 21, 2023, through Hamster Corporation’s Arcade Archives series for the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4.

Double Dragon (1987) – who was a fan? You play in a post-apocalyptic world as brothers Billy and Jimmy Lee, punching, kicking, and brawling through city slums, factories, and hideouts to rescue Billy's girlfriend Marian from the Black Warriors gang. To this day, one of the best beat 'em ups in co-op mode. The big character sprites, badass soundtrack, and the ability to pick up dropped weapons like baseball bats, whips, and knives made it an excellent game. I wonder if it maybe influenced others like Final Fight or Street Fighter?

It is of interest to retro gaming historians for being an early example of a game that had an into-the-screen-throw. Interestingly its release predates Konami’s Turtles arcade game (with a similar mechanic) by just less than a month. The title sounds like a sneeze but is intended as a Chinese-style karate yell (similar to “hi-ya!”). The kanji 破兆 roughly conveys “broken omen,” tying into the premise. The game is set in ancient China where an evil force or demon is trying to break free from a stone statue/prison.

Rushing Beat Ran (Jaleco/1993) is a 2D side-scrolling beat 'em up for the Super Nintendo. Fast and fun, it's the second game in Jaleco's Rushing Beat trilogy. In the West, it was heavily localized and stripped of its cutscenes, released under the title Brawl Brothers. But it's possible to unlock the original by pressing the B, A, X, and Y buttons repeatedly during the Jaleco logo screen until it will glitch. Then, press right to move the glitched screen right, then press down 3 times and then Start to access the (glitched) options menu. There, the game starts to work normally as Rushing Beat Ran afterwards.

The roots of SNK fighting games really come from the Fatal Fury series. It grew side by side as a rival to Street Fighter II, and it’s honestly an iconic series. These days, it feels like it’s been absorbed into The King of Fighters series, but with the recent release of Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves, the legacy of Fatal Fury is finally continuing again. If you grew up in the arcade era, there’s a good chance you loved this series.

It was the first arcade cabinet with a steering wheel featuring force feedback to mimic road surfaces, plus pedals and a gear shift. It was also the first to let players choose from three synth-pop tracks (Magical Sound Shower, Passing Breeze, and Splash Wave) via an in-game radio to personalize the vibe. It simulated real Ferrari Testarossa traits (horsepower, torque, and gears) and allowed skillful drifting - or bad drifting, in my case. The road would fork (left/right) at certain intervals, also a first for its type, giving the player choice and making it more interactive. Out Run ultimately became Sega's top-selling arcade game in 1987.

You can punch, kick, and - most fun of all - pick up and use weapons and objects to fight endless waves of thugs. What made it special were the massive, highly detailed character sprites, fluid animation (including grabs, throws, and specials), and interactive environments (barrels, oil drums, and other destructible or throwable items). For 1989, this was almost unheard of and challenged Street Fighter and Double Dragon (I and II) for best beat 'em up. Funny little glitch in the Matrix: Haggar's one (!?) suspender is over his right shoulder when facing right and over his left shoulder when facing left. Magic!

At the time, rumors were circulating that the game would be ported to PC, so when it was suddenly announced for the Super Famicom, it came as a huge shock. Although Guy was missing and two-player co-op wasn’t supported, the mere fact that we could play Final Fight at home felt like a blessing in itself. Looking back now, the Super Famicom version was released in December 1990, when the system’s maximum cartridge size was 8 megabits (1 megabyte). Considering that the arcade version had more than twice that amount of data, it seems clear that these limitations led to those difficult compromises. Beat ’em up games were already popular in arcades before Final Fight, but after its release, the genre truly boomed, eventually leading to Capcom’s finest belt-scrolling action titles—culminating in Dungeons & Dragons, the pinnacle of their beat ’em up legacy.
