Experts and watchers, however, say that the AIS-based tracking may not produce an accurate picture of the ship traffic as vessels tend to turn off their AIS transponders while transiting through the strait, which handles nearly 20% of the global energy flows. Analysis claim that shadow tankers are among the ships that are currently transiting through the Strait of Hormuz. As per reports, around several ships of a Greece-based ship operator has also passed through the waterway in the last few days.

According to vessel tracking data from the Strait of Hormuz appears to have effectively closed just before 1700 UTC yesterday, with no transits observed after that time. At approximately 1650 UTC, the tanker 'Starbound Explorer' was turned around in Iranian waters before completing its transit and returned to the Persian Gulf. Around the same time, the container ship 'MSC Qingdao', which was exiting via the U.S. established shipping route through Omani waters, reversed course back toward the Persian Gulf before later turning around again and ultimately exiting the Strait.

Is the Strait of Hormuz open or closed? Came up over lunch so I voice noted my agent to "boot up god's eye view and check." It sent me back this timelapse clip -- refreshed the AIS data, checked oil futures, mapped 120 days of vessel transits and rendered it out. TL;DR it's kinda open. Traffic is moving again, just not back to pre-conflict normal. Feels like I have a geopolitical analyst on demand. We're already living in the future my friends!

The Falcon Eye already has this capability. It's over the Horizon Radar System can detect all vessels in Nigeria's EEZ regardless of AIS transmission. So many rogue vessels that switched off their AIS system to evade detection have ultimately been tracked down and seized.
