JNIM and ISSP are gaining ground. 🇷🇺🇲🇱🏴 As part of the agreements between the FLA/JNIM coalition and the Wagner PMC, the Africa Corps withdrew from the town of Ber east of Timbuktu and the gold mines of Intahaka west of Gao (where Malian soldiers and pro-government militias surrendered). Meanwhile, the ISSP took advantage of the Russian and Malian withdrawal from the border with Niger to seize control of the border town of Labbezanga and other positions, as well as Tessit, which had theoretically been handed over by Wagner/FAMa to JNIM. Furthermore, exploiting the vulnerability of government positions in Menaka, they launched an assault on the city, capturing it completely and driving the Africa Corps and Malian forces back to the base and airport on the western outskirts. Results in 24 hours: 12 pickups destroyed by artillery and mortar fire, around 50 militants killed. 32 militants killed in direct combat. An isolated outpost held its position for the entire day in full encirclement, 6km from main forces, destroying 6 armed pickups and capturing one with weapons and ammunition intact. The armored group spent much of the day partially surrounded, breaking out alongside Malian army units and destroying 4 more pickups. Some forward posts were evacuated under heavy mortar fire, with units regrouping to better positions inside the town.

At least 2 groups are behind this. The Azawad Liberation Front, a coalition of Tuareg and Arab separatists formed in late 2024, has been pushing for an independent homeland in northern Mali for decades. Alongside them, JNIM, al-Qaeda's West Africa affiliate, has been waging a parallel insurgency across the Sahel. Mali's military junta has been relying on Russian Africa Corps mercenaries since cutting ties with France in 2022. But Russian forces have reportedly been withdrawing from the north, and the FLA has been filling the vacuum fast.
