Wait, is this actually real?

Myth busters did this years ago. Had a spirits expert do a blind taste test on vodka that had been passed through a Brita once, twice, etc up to like 10x. And the guy could tell exactly which was which. But none was as good as the top-shelf vodka.

Interesting, gonna have to check this out, somehow nobody told me about any of this.

Yes and it’s an old trick from the 90s. You are better spending your money on good vodka because the cost of charcoal filters and vodka is more than the price of the high quality vodka.

This seems to be the consensus so far. It works, but you’re better off just buying the good stuff.

Yeah. We did this in college. Buy any cheap handle of vodka. Run it through a couple times. Boom! High quality vodka. 😂

Seriously nobody ever told me about this and I am furious about it. I am literally just finding out about it now.

Yes. Buddy back in the day before he joined AA would take bottom shelf vodka and run through a Brita water filter to remove the impurities. It worked. Even the AA staff was impressed when he told them about it.

Lol, this one is my favorite so far 🤣

Where was this science during covid?

Asking the real questions here! They’ve been hiding this from us all this time! 😱

I did this with beer many years ago. The liquid goes through, loses the carbonation and the beer-ish flavor. Maintains the color and alcohol content, it’s like drinking tan water that gets you drunk.

Might have to try this, for science

Old and known:

Nobody told me!

Youtube is an endless knowledgebase.

I did this like 10 years ago and it worked. Only thing is it ruins the filter, in that everything put through it after will taste like spirits.

I guess that kinda makes sense. One booze Brita and one water brita it is. 🤣

Being naive I used my fairly new filter to make Johnny Walker more palatable and just ended up tossing it haha

Pulls out the nasty/extraneous "congeners" which add to hangovers (more expensive vodkas do that through multiple distillations and reverse osmosis.

Gotcha, so this is maybe why they specified “well” alcohols.

Yup, congeners add to the nastiness of hangovers, eg. red wine overindulgence hits you worse than vodka, comparatively speaking.

We used to do this when we were poor college kids, but once you needed a new filter you might as well have got the good vodka.

Lol, this is actually funny and makes sense. Cheap vodka 13.99, filter $10. Decent vodka $19.99, filter $0. Run it through a couple times and it’s a wash.

Maybe for cheap booze. I would never ruin a proper bottle, even with mix.

I think that’s the thing, it helps cheaper booze taste better

Moonshiners in Appalachia and the Ozarks used charcoal filtering to improve the purity and smoothness of their moonshine and copper tubing to increase the potency and quality of their liquor. Prohibition bootleggers used charcoal filtering for the same reasons 😉

In retrospect it makes perfect sense, I guess I just hadn’t considered it thoroughly

Lol, I only meant college kids didn't invent the idea of filtering rotgut to make it palatable 🤣 Good moonshine is a smooth assassin 😉

College students have known this for decades

It does appear that way, somehow nobody gave me the heads up on this

i am so glad i found this out after i quit drinking lol.

Works with cheap vodka..

Yeah that’s the gist I’m getting, it works well for the cheaper stuff

As a rum drinker, does this work with cheap ass rum?

It sounds like it’s especially good for this

I need to try it with some Old Grandad bourbon

I’ve tried that and from the sounds of things, it could definitely benefit from the ol brita treatment

Known this for 20 yrs

Then its a good thing Brita filters werent around when I was in highschool.... I mean, college 😏

I was doing this in college back in the 90’s. Taaka vodka became not nearly as disgusting 😂

No freakin way! 😆

Apparently it’s real and nobody told me

We gotta try it….

Extremely real. I think it deteriorates the filter faster though.

Yeah that’s what it sounds like. It appears if you use the filter for this it’s toast as far as using it for water is concerned.

If you are shooting liquor, you're not tasting it.

This been known since like 2014 lol

@ResortOriginals Bro nobody told me about this

It was on Mythbusters years ago. True.

This is blowing my mind right now, I had no idea.

Almost every distillery uses Grain Neutral Spirits that were pre-distilled a few times before they get to the distillery. Generally speaking, running the GNS through charcoal filtration is better at removing congeners (off tastes) than extra distillations.

Yeah it works.

Literally the first time I’ve ever heard of this. Has this been like known knowledge and I’ve been out of the loop?

It's been a thing since the brita pitcher first came around lol

I am definitely out of the loop

I wonder if you'd still get sick as hell or if it helps with that too...

I imagine the alcohol would degrade the filter a lot quicker

How do I reach theese kids?!

Yeah it’s worth doing. Way healthier. Big brand alcohol is industrial production and has to be filtered. But filters wear off. This helps. I even did this to cheap wine when I was cooking shrimps in butter with garlic. There is a ton of heavy metal contamination in alcohol. 🤷♂️

I'll be impressed if it works with Malort

Not familiar with that one

And you are luckier for it. It's a Chicago thing. Tastes like paint thinner

When.. the bottle says “6x distilled” …….. what did they think distilled meant?

It’s already been distilled 15x what are you talking about?

Apparently it works well, especially on the cheap stuff
