This evening, I was on SABC News discussing the lessons Africa must learn from Donald Trump’s trade tariffs and what Africa needs to do to avoid falling victim to such knee-jerk policy changes. I was with SABC News’ foreign editor, Sophie Mokoena.m I emphasised the need for Africa to increase intra-continental trade, ramp up infrastructure such as railways, and remove tariffs to facilitate successful trade within the continent. I added that Zimbabwe’s 100% tariffs on South African goods are an example of how such policies are counterproductive if we want to increase trade among ourselves.

We must be concerned about the place that Africa occupies on the world stage. The great powers want to reduce Africa to a purely instrumental entity in the service of their causes and obviously do not want the continent to be able to play an important role. The fractures of the colonial era between a so-called French-speaking, Spanish speaking, Portuguese-speaking, Arabic-speaking and English-speaking Africa have diminished, as have the post-Cold War ideologies that dominated the entire second part of the 20th century. Today Africa wants to be itself, it is “Africanophone” if you allow it. Africa expects more equality, respect, equity and justice in its relations and partnerships with the rest of the world, with the major powers, whatever they may be. Today Africans want to be true partners. In the concert of nations, Africa must be listened to for dialogue to have meaning. The lack of listening perverts the meaning of the dialogue, which turns into a juxtaposition of monologues and biased reasons. Africa certainly does not have the same megaphones as the great powers of the world, but the voice of Africa counts and must count if we want to have Africa as a partner on major international issues. Moreover, Africa expects a true partnership and our allies must make an effort to accept the spirit of such a partnership. Our allies cannot always expect unconditional support from the continent. I would like to congratulate my dear friend and fellow at the African Leadership Institute, Lerato Mataboge, for being elected to lead the infrastructure and energy portfolio at the African Union. As the new Commissioner for Infrastructure and Energy of the African Union Commission, Lerato will be responsible for one of the most important talking points in Africa that will help propel the continent towards closing the wide gap between itself and other continents. Lerato is a highly intelligent individual who has served as the Deputy Director of Trade for the South African government. South Africa’s loss is truly Africa’s gain, as the continent needs experienced yet youthful bureaucrats chosen for their competence, not through political deals. Africa’s transportation infrastructure is underdeveloped, with only about 53% of roads paved, compared to higher percentages in other developing regions. This inadequacy increases intra-African trade costs by approximately 30–40% making goods more expensive. Africa is struggling with digital infrastructure, with only 0.6 fixed broadband subscriptions per 100 people, compared to 2.1 in South Asia and 10.6 in the Middle East and North Africa. Electing a South African to this important position makes a lot of sense because it is the continental leader in this area and Lerato’s wide network in the areas of economics, trade, banking and other related financial institutions will certainly come in hand. Congratulations to her and thank you to the South African government and its people for sending such a highly qualified leader to the African Union, and congratulations to Africa as a continent!

Over 2 decades of trade between Africa and the US under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) has come to an end, but did Africa gain anything from it? For so many years what Africa called an opportunity and the US tagged a partnership AGOA, only trapped Africa further in a cycle of dependency and cheap natural resource exports. Far from being a loss to Africa, the end of AGOA is an opportunity to rewrite the continent's economics story on its own terms, and in the African Continental Free Trade Area (AFCTA) lies an opportunity to do so in a manner that would be transformational. The time has come for Africa to use its own resources and population to enrich itself, rather than tie itself up in Western dependency masked as "bilateral trade agreements."

South Africa appreciates the report on the state of peace and security on our continent, and remains concerned about worsening conditions of conflict, war and instability on our continent. South Africa reaffirms its unwavering commitment to the vision of a peaceful, prosperous and integrated Africa as articulated in #Agenda2063. As we meet here, a number of African countries are currently under suspension from our Union due to Unconstitutional Changes of Government (UCGs), thus reverses democratic gains and development of our continent. The slow transition to constitutional order by the suspended countries is of concern. There must be demonstrable and comprehensive political engagement to assist any suspended country to navigate their respective transitions successfully and speedily; and to ensure they do not slide back into conflict. The situation in Sudan remains of concern to us all. We reiterate our call for all warring parties to lay down their arms immediately, allow unfettered humanitarian access and, most importantly, embark on an inclusive national political dialogue as the only way towards a sustainable resolution. With respect to the recent political and security developments in South Sudan, the situation is concerning. We call for a ceasefire in all affected states and urge all stakeholders to engage in an all-inclusive dialogue that will pave the way for free, inclusive and credible elections to end the long transition. South Africa, together with other C5 Members and members of IGAD is hosting a C5 Plus Summit here in Addis Ababa to consolidate South Sudan peace. There is a need for pragmatism and for an honest assessment of the minimum conditions required to conduct free, inclusive and credible elections, while acknowledging that certain processes may necessarily extend beyond the lifespan of the Revitalised Agreement for the South Africa is concerned about the prevailing security and humanitarian situation in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, despite several mediation and peace processes. We reiterate that the unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the DRC must be upheld and respected. We condemn the continued capture of territories by the M23/AFC in the Kivu and Ituri provinces. Such unlawful actions must be corrected decisively. South Africa has assumed the role of the Regional Oversight Mechanism for the DRC and the Region, and during our tenure we will work with all signatory countries to the Framework to find a durable solution to this protracted conflict.

Only a fraction of the trillions of dollars of global investable capital comes to Africa - My interview with CNBC TV conducted after I spoke at the UN’s “Africa Business Forum 2026” (ABF). Video below. My recommendations: 1. Invest in young Africans. That’s how “Asian Tigers” such as South Korea developed. 2. African countries must collaborate and have common stands. Small fragmented markets do not attract large capital. Implement the AfCFTA asap. 3. Africa has to address the perception of risk which is deterring FDI and forcing African countries to pay “prejudicial premium” on sovereign and corporate borrowings. 4. Invest in transformational sectors such as domestic manufacturing including resource benefaction in Africa, agriculture, infrastructure and technology. 5. The African Union (AU) needs to have a sense of urgency and prepare the continent for the impact of the dismantling of the global order, dramatic changes in geopolitics, shifting global trade & investment policies and rapid technological (especially AI) changes.
