One of the notable features of the Lockheed Martin KC-130J Super Hercules is its ability to use reverse thrust, thanks to its turboprop engines. Caught this “QB” Marine Aerial Refueler here in Nairobi performing a power-back maneuver. The pilots are taking it nice and easy. One important “don’t” during a power-back is never use the brakes to stop the aircraft — doing so can risk tipping the aircraft onto its tail. Instead, the pilots smoothly transition back to forward thrust and carefully bring the aircraft to a stop, then taxi normally.

Why does Airbus A380 only use its two inner engines for reverse thrust during landing? This is to reduce weight and avoid foreign object debris. The outer engines hang over grass or dirt—activating reversers there could blow debris forward and back into the engines. Due to crew actions on takeoff, engine thrust was reduced drastically. The jet lost significant altitude and speed: it flew as low as 153 ft and at a speed of 158 kts before the crew recovered. Boeing inquiry stated the jet lost power after crew mistakenly turned off the engine´s water injection system, reducing thrust, which led to a loss of altitude and speed that put the plane near an irrecoverable stall. To get an idea of how close this came to a major disaster (a 747 loaded with fuel going down in a major city), all of Boeing´s simulations of the scenarios presented in the flight resulted in a crash. Let me show you the thrust reverse ops check after performing maintenance on a GE90. The outer sleeve translates rearward, exposing the cascade vanes. At the same time the blocker doors inside the bypass duct deploy to block the normal rearward airflow. All that fan air gets redirected forward through the cascades... that’s reverse thrust helping the aircraft stop. If you’ve only seen it from the cabin or side, take a look at the back view in the video to get the full picture.

We are back at it with forward module testing, gearing up for New Glenn’s second flight. Part of this testing campaign is to activate the hydrogen peroxide system that fuels our Reaction Control System, or RCS. The GS1 RCS provides 20,000 lbf thrust in any direction, allowing the first stage to reorient itself in space before re-entry and to precisely target Jacklyn in high winds during landing. To give you an idea, a single F-18 Super Hornet F414 engine provides a similar amount of thrust at 22,000 lbf, so you can see how powerful this system is. The RCS performed nominally during our NG-1 flight and successfully reoriented GS1 to within 0.5 deg of our target attitude during exo-atmospheric flight.
