Germany has officially transferred the INS Drakon, the newest and final Dolphin-II class submarine, significantly strengthening Israel's underwater capabilities. #UPDATE: Turkey to expand military training and security support for Somalia #Turkey will continue and expand its military training, consultancy and security support to #Somalia as part of efforts to enhance international stability, Defence Ministry spokesperson Rear Admiral Zeki Aktürk said. Speaking at a weekly press briefing in #Ankara, Aktürk said Turkish support is focused on strengthening security and stability in Somalia. He noted that Turkey is providing assistance to protect drilling activities and the “Spaceport and Test Firing Range” under construction, as well as supporting counter-terrorism operations carried out by the Somali National Army. Aktürk said the Turkish Armed Forces will maintain a strong deterrent presence through ongoing support and deployments in Somalia. Naval elements operating in the Gulf of Aden, off the Somali coast and in the Arabian Sea have conducted port visits to #Mogadishu. A delegation from Turkey’s Naval Forces Command also recently visited Somalia to review ongoing activities and military cooperation between the two countries.

Another milestone in indigenous Shipbuilding! Yard 3037, being constructed under Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel (NGOPV) project, was launched at GRSE - Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd , Kolkata on #11Aug 2026 by Mrs Manika Sadhu in the presence of VAdm Sanjay Sadhu, Controller of Warship Production & Acquisition. The construction of NGOPVs is concurrently being undertaken at two shipyards (Goa Shipyard Ltd & #GRSE). These indigenously built ships will be utilised for multi domain operations, such as maritime surveillance, search & rescue, protection of offshore assets and anti-piracy missions. NGOPVs derive their names from India’s rich heritage, with this ship being named as ‘Shruti’, referring to four Vedas. 🕵️ Project boats were born at the height of the Cold War. The US Navy wanted a way to conduct covert intelligence gathering on the ocean floor, & the perfect platform was the first nuclear powered guided missile submarine, USS Halibut (SSGN-587). Designed to launch Regulus cruise missiles, Halibut was left without a mission when the Polaris missile program made Regulus obsolete. In the mid-1960s, Halibut received extensive modifications at Mare Island Naval Shipyard & was repurposed. She was outfitted with saturation diving equipment pioneered by the SeaLab program, side thrusters to allow hovering, & advanced deep-towed search systems. Halibut proved the value of seabed espionage by executing missions such as locating sunken Soviet boat K-129 during Operation Sand Dollar & tapping a Soviet underwater communications cable in the Sea of Okhotsk during Operation Ivy Bells. The US Navy later followed by converting attack boats to carry specialized equipment, lockout chambers, & remotely operated vehicles to tap cables, & gather intelligence. Today, this legacy continues under Submarine Development Squadron 5 out of Bangor. Project Boats: ★ USS Halibut (SSN-587): The pioneer of the project boats. Converted in 1965, she laid the groundwork for deep-sea cable tapping & seabed intelligence recovery before being decommissioned in 1976. ★ USS Seawolf (SSN-575): The second nuclear-powered boat, she was modified to serve as a special projects boat, performing covert intelligence operations. ★ NR-1: The unique nuclear-powered deep submergence vehicle that was never commissioned. Much smaller than any other nuclear-powered submarine, NR-1 could drive on the ocean floor using wheels & remain submerged for extended periods to map the seabed, retrieve sensitive objects, & conduct covert research. ★ USS Richard B. Russell (SSN-687): The Sturgeon-class attack boat was overhauled in the early 1980s & underwent extensive ocean engineering modifications. She was fitted with a distinctive bustle to support tethered antennas & clandestine operations. ★ USS Parche (SSN-683): The famous Sturgeon-class boat that became the premier project boat of the late Cold War. She received major ocean engineering modifications & was later lengthened by 100 feet between 1987 & 1991 to accommodate additional “research & development” gear. Parche is the most highly decorated vessel in US history. ★ Jimmy Carter (SSN-23): The third & last Seawolf-class boat & the current successor to Parche. Unlike earlier project boats that were modified mid-career, Jimmy Carter was constructed with a 100-foot Multi-Mission Platform insert specifically designed for special operations. This unique section allows her to deploy uncrewed underwater vehicles, remotely operated vehicles, & advanced intelligence-gathering systems. But this is all just the musings of an Old Submariner because none of this ever happened... we were never there

The Vancouver Police Training Academy in the Woodward’s building was officially opened today at a ribbon-cutting ceremony with more than 275 guests and community members attending. “This state-of-the-art Academy represents a new chapter in the history of the VPD and, crucially, in how recruits are trained to become officers who will serve the unique and dynamic policing needs of Vancouver,” said Vancouver Police Department (VPD) Chief Steve Rai. “For the first time since 1978, when the Department last had its own training program, we will be able to fully develop the next generation of police officers in Vancouver -- from the day they join our organization to when they graduate and begin their careers with the VPD.” Forty “Class One” recruits began their studies at the facility in the Woodward’s building at 351 Abbott Street in the Downtown Eastside earlier this week. The students will complete their training and start work in the city on June 25, 2027. Another 40 recruits (Class Two) begin their studies January 18, 2027. “The opening of the Vancouver Police Training Academy is a significant milestone for public safety in Vancouver,” said Terry Yung, Minister of State for Community Safety and Integrated Services. “As a graduate and former trustee of the Justice Institute of B.C., training recruits within the city will give them valuable exposure to the operational environment, diverse communities, and public safety challenges they will encounter throughout their careers. This academy will help prepare the next generation of officers and strengthen public safety for residents, businesses, and visitors alike.” Initially announced in February 2026, the 30,000-square-foot, 3-floor Training Academy received provincial approval in March. Construction in the space formerly occupied by London Drugs began June 1. “The Academy is a foundational addition to the Woodward’s building and to the Downtown Eastside community. Greater police presence in the area is already showing a positive public safety impact with the addition of District 5 operations and will only continue to improve now the Academy is running,” said Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim. “Vancouver’s residents, business, and visitors are clear – safety is a top priority for them. This location was specifically chosen to enhance safety, stability and community in the DTES, Gastown, Chinatown and surrounding areas.” The City of Vancouver provided $4 million in total for the work, which included $2.8 million for the establishment of District 5 and $1.2 million for the Academy. They will teach a provincially approved specialized VPD curriculum. Another nine officer instructors are in place at the Tactical Training Centre, where recruits complete use-of-force training, firearms instruction, and other critical skill-building. Driving instruction is provided by VPD trainers at Mission Raceway. All recruits at the Academy use laptops and work under major case management principles, learning VPD systems from Day One to ensure they are efficient and effective when deployed. The VPD Museum will also move into the Woodward’s building so visitors can learn more about the history of the Department.
