In the early days of Waymo's service in Phoenix, they had a large number of roadside assistance vans traveling alongside their vehicles, each with two people inside. When the Waymo vehicle got stuck, one person would jump out of the RA van and drive the car. Today Waymo still has roadside assistance vans ready to help when a car has an issue, but they don't have to be directly with one car — issues are rare enough that a few roadside assistance vans can handle a much larger fleet. It's funny to see people take shots at Tesla for doing the same. Of course they're going to be careful with the first customer deployment. No, someone isn't secretly controlling the car from outside. The AI model on the car is driving the car. Go test drive any Tesla and find out for yourself. It doesn't need help from anyone, it can see and react to things before you do.

Even my kids know that in a world full of Tesla Robotaxis, Waymo is dunzo. It’s really not that complicated. Waymo needs expensive LiDAR, radar, cameras, specialized hardware, detailed maps, and a massive amount of infrastructure just to operate in certain areas. Tesla’s approach is completely different. Cameras are cheap. Tesla can mass-produce vehicles at a scale Waymo can’t come close to, use the same AI system across millions of cars, collect massive amounts of real-world driving data, and improve the entire fleet through software updates. That’s where the economics become almost impossible to compete with. The cheaper you can build the car, the cheaper you can operate it, and the more vehicles you can put on the road, the cheaper you can eventually make every ride. Waymo might prove Robotaxis can work. Tesla’s goal is to make them cheap enough and build enough of them to be everywhere. That’s the difference people still don’t understand. This isn’t just about who has the better Robotaxi today. It’s about who can build millions of them, drive down the cost per mile, and scale across the world. Even my kids understand the end game. Tesla Robotaxis are going to be everywhere. In the world where Tesla Robotaxis are flooded all around the world, it will very difficult for Waymo to survive.

Many people see Waymo and think they’re ahead of everyone in the autonomous driving race. After all, they’re giving out over 100,000 paid robotaxi rides a week across cities like San Francisco, Phoenix, and Los Angeles with a fleet of 700 vehicles, and on the surface, it could seem like they’re dominating. However, each Waymo costs $100,000 due to the complex, expensive hardware that’s in use. And due to this, they’re losing money on every single ride. For Waymo, scaling this business up means higher costs, and I don’t think it’s a sustainable model, even if the company keeps pouring $ into it. Now, look at Tesla. With a fleet closing in on 7 million vehicles worldwide, Tesla is playing a different game. Instead of relying on bulky, expensive hardware, Tesla uses a much simpler, more cost-effective approach, just 8 or 9 cameras and a powerful AI neural net. This AI, constantly learning from millions of real-world miles, means Tesla’s software gets smarter every day and can be scaled across the globe without needing new hardware for every car. So, while Waymo might seem like it’s leading the charge today, in my eyes, Tesla is quietly preparing to take over the entire field. They’ve created the foundation for something far bigger and is why I believe the true leader in Robotaxis will be Tesla, and I can’t wait for everyone to see it unfold on 10/10!

NEWS: Tesla is officially testing FSD in The Boring Company's Vegas Loop tunnel system. “We’ve started to test,” Steve Hill, CEO of the Las Vegas Convention & Visitors Authority. No passengers have been in vehicles during the testing. In the future, the Boring Company will remove safety drivers from the front seat during testing, Hill said, but there is no telling when that will take place, as it will depend on when Tesla and the Boring Company can demonstrate to the LVCVA that it is safe to do so. Hill said that the vehicles are currently being tested in self-driving mode inside the tunnels, “experiencing the environment,” as “they find spots that are difficult for them.” The rock walls of the tunnels, Hill said, combined with the bright, colorful lights in the passageways create some “interesting but odd lighting” for Tesla’s self-driving system. Longtime $TSLA bear Craig Irwin, from Roth Capital, who has frequently appeared on CNBC to speak negatively about Tesla, just raised his $TSLA price target by a whopping 347% to $380 (from $85). For years, he had called Tesla "egregiously overvalued." Now, he has a BUY rating on the stock. Here's what he said today about Tesla: "This quarter is probably the last quarter of relative weakness; Now he (Elon) has got a new pool of buyers. Conservatives that might not have looked at EVs quite as closely in the past that allow an acceleration of demand in the core U.S. market; I don't see very many negative catalysts. There are abundant positive catalysts. Bias is now to the upside. The market cap may be huge, but they are doing big things." On FSD he says: "Where I need to look at things a little differently than how I did previously is we look at the incremental solution for FSD and the incremental solutions for robtoaxis. The use of Lidar is not long term sustainable because of the cost. It's something that does need to come out of the (Waymo) vehicles over the long term. As I've talked to more of the engineers involved in these different projects, I've learned that there's often two or three teleoperation engineers. Basically human operators there to catch something that goes wrong. Tesla even started hiring teleoperation engineers last week. Tesla is not going to do any worse than Waymo. If they're more intently focused on an optical only solution, I think competing at the edge, some of this technology that's being brought to bring down the energy consumption for the computer is something that Tesla is going to be more adept at. I think they're a real contender in the long run."
