#WATCH | Draft UGC (Minimum Qualifications for Appointment & Promotion of Teachers and Academic Staff in Universities and Colleges and Measures for Maintenance of Standards in Higher Education) Regulations, 2025 released. UGC Chairman Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar says, "Faculty members are the backbone of our universities and colleges. So, when we select and promote them, we need to evaluate them holistically. In the earlier regulations, we were driven by quantitative evaluation such as the academic performance indicators. Whereas, in the new regulations that we are bringing out in the draft regulations, there are many opportunities that we are creating to the faculty members. Earlier, if somebody had an undergraduate degree and PhD, they were not eligible to be appointed but now these new regulations provide that opportunity. So, there are 3 qualifications that we are providing for the new entrance into the universities and colleges. Those with undergraduate degree and PhD or a master's degree and PhD can apply without writing the UGC-NET. But those candidates who have a master's degree in non-professional programs such as Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences and Sciences have to clear UCG-NET to be eligible to become Assistant Professors. But candidates who have an engineering master's degree, such as ME and MTech, they don't need to write UGC-NET and they can directly apply for Assistant Professor positions in Engineering and technology programs..."
