We have shared the struggles of Ibrahim who is living with pemphigus vulgaris, a chronic autoimmune disease that causes painful blisters and open sores across his skin. Every movement is a battle with pain. In Gaza, the treatment he needs is extremely limited. If Ibrahim is not hospitalized, he cannot receive the medication that keeps his condition from flaring up out of control. He wants to be in his tent, with his children, receiving care from his family. And what he really wants and what he really needs urgently is treatment abroad. Until that becomes possible, The Sameer Project will support him with medication to aid him with his daily battle. On March 4 we provided Ibrahim with a week’s worth of medication and ointments and a hygiene kit for a total of $182 after commission. This is one of the most expensive medical cases we have taken on since he will need the treatment weekly, and we cannot do it alone. Support special cases: water distribution teams would see Wissam struggling to fill containers of water. Like other kids he waits in line for hours to bring drinking water back home, unlike other kids he does this by crawling through the dirt on his knees due to a deformity of his legs that he was born with. We asked Wissam’s father how we can help, and it turns out that he does not get much support. The Sameer Project team returned with everything his father asked for and some additional treats for Wissam. We supplied a large thick winter blanket, a mattress and pillow, a large food parcel with sweets and treats, and clothing for Wissam. The total including 11% commission fees was $205. At 12 years old, Obaida Abu Suleiman says his life is over, dreams stolen. He was hit by an airstrike when him and his father were just walking down the street, shrapnel severing his leg, leading to the amputation of his right leg and his father’s left leg. They shared a hospital bed in the North until they were forcefully displaced South with no where to go. The Sameer Project offered Obaida a place in one of our medical camps in Sawarha, Central Gaza. Here, we gave him and his family a large tent, daily food and water, daily wound changes, onsite physiotherapy, and mental health support. As you can see in the video, Obaida is making massive improvements thanks to the doctors, nurses, and physiotherapists at our camp medical point. He is bending his knee, learning to reuse muscles that were partially lost. We hope that Obaida will soon be able to get a prosthetic, get his life back. Parents in Gaza carry unbelievable burdens, alone. Help here: Atta was diagnosed with autism before the genocide and, like many children with varying degrees of autism, he relied on specialized care and support. During the genocide he was also injured. Since then, the trauma of repeated displacement, bombardment, hunger, and the collapse of Gaza's healthcare and social support systems has taken a devastating toll. His condition has deteriorated. Atta has lost the ability to speak and now struggles to walk. His mother is raising him on her own. She is not only trying to keep him safe and fed, but also trying to replace services that no longer exist. The therapists, specialists, and support systems that once gave children like Atta a chance to thrive have been destroyed or are no longer accessible. Today, she is exhausted. Simply asking for help. Atta urgently needs medication, a proper mattress to protect his fragile body, and specialized food to meet his nutritional needs. Razan is a 4 year old girl, who lays in Al Aqsa Hospital suffering from brain atrophy and severe malnutrition. She has multiple life threatening chronic illnesses that without proper care will consumer her frail body. This is not how Razan always was. Her mother reports that she was fine before the genocide started but with deteriorating conditions, Razan also became malnourished and suffered from cerebral degeneration. Now, her mother watches as her daughter is wasting away. The Sameer Project provided Razan with boxed nutritional supplements, Cerelac formula, and puréed food. Sourcing this is difficult, and purchasing it is expensive, but thanks to you and the donations received in our Medical Campaign we were able to make a bulk purchase when we found the goods. The Refaat Alareer Camp is a medical camp, meaning we have criteria for the families that we bring in who have vulnerable conditions, chronic illnesses or injuries, so that we utilize our services and facilities to benefit those who need help the most. We have an onsite medical clinic that cares for our camp families, takes in patients from the area, and also fills medication and treatment requests we refer to them. Our team of nurses and doctors work diligently to host medical days to quell outbreaks of communicable diseases, provide nutritional support to hospital patients, and visit families in dire need who cannot afford even transport to see a doctor. They are heroes in a collapsing healthcare system. Our medical team recently held complete medical assessments for every resident in the camp. We have patients with amputated legs, shrapnel injuries, quadriplegia, brain damage, cerebral palsy, cardiac conditions, psychological disorders, burns, and more. They all need regular and specific medical care and medication they otherwise would not have access to, but that we of course provide. You might remember Ezz, a father who has had 48 procedures and surgeries all to repair his torn apart intestines. He relies on colostomy bags and needs another operation to finally help him potentially have a more intact digestive tract. Ezz appealed for replacement colostomy bags, nutritious food, and help to afford the CT Scan he needed before scheduling the surgery. The Sameer Project returned to him with everything. We provided a hygiene kit, a large food package, and 20 colostomy bags that we had in one of our medical points in the South. We even coordinated with hospital administration to arrange for a CT Scan for a nominal price and scheduled the operation for him just a few days later. The total cost of all the medical support and the scan was about $150 and we were able to arrange everything quickly to provide Ezz relief. We cannot go back to this - burned and maimed babies, child martyrs, families torn apart. Prior to the ceasefire agreement, in one of the last mass casualty attacks (before today) our medical point in our Sawarha Camp received baby Rosa who had severe facial and upper torso burns from a fire that broke out after an airstrike. Her grandfather, who is one of her primary caretakers was also injured. Since then, the Translating Falasteen (Translating Falasteen (Palestine)) x The Sameer Project medical team has been following up with Rosa for daily wound cleanings and burn debridement. We provided her with medication and burn cream and we are following up with scar cream as well. Thanks to the detailed personal care, weeks later Rosa is healing well and will make a full recovery. That’s what happened to Mahmoud Abu Foul at the age of 28. He was abducted from Kamal Adwan hospital on December 27th and endured 8 months of brutal torture, beatings and humiliation. Mahmoud like many other returned hostages isn’t getting the proper medical care and can’t get a prosthetic leg as it is not available in Gaza. Borders need to open for doctors and field hospitals to provide adequate treatment. Till then, The Sameer Project are providing medical care through our Sawarha medical point and medical treatment camp to Mahmoud and others like him. Meanwhile, we gave Mahmoud dressings and medications worth $68 and cash aid. We are looking to support the released hostages with medical and mental health care. Little Abdullah is in Nasser Hospital receiving treatment for a disorder that also took the life of his younger brother. Abdullah suffers from rickets and an enlarged liver, and his younger brother died from complications exacerbated by malnutrition and the family’s inability to purchase formula. The Sameer Project medical team visited Abdullah in the hospital, bringing him the medication he needs as well as boxes of nutritional formula to help him gain strength. The boxes of nutritional supplements were $5.15 each, part of a larger purchase, and the medication was already in stock at our medical point. Abdullah’s referral report for travel abroad has been collected and he has been submitted for security clearance. The Sameer Project medical team visited Abdullah in the hospital, bringing him the medication he needs as well as boxes of nutritional formula to help him gain strength. The boxes of nutritional supplements were $5.15 each, part of a larger purchase, and the medication was already in stock at our medical point. Abdullah’s referral report for travel abroad has been collected and he has been submitted for security clearance. Support complex cases: It’s incredibly hard for any of us to imagine what life is truly like in Gaza right now. The daily massacres, the ever present buzzing of drones, overcrowded streets, stimulating sounds, the smells, lack of any infrastructure including water and waste and medical. And then to have a loved one or a child with a disability during this…how can you explain what is going on? The fear they feel. Saeed is a 20 year old with cerebral palsy. He needs an incredible amount of medication to keep him comfortable. Everything from anti seizure medicine to sleeping aids to intestinal relief suppositories. This is very difficult to source and out of reach for his family to afford. But what did Saeed do to deserve this pain? The Sameer Project has been assisting Saeed for 5 months, replenishing his medication, nutritional supplements, and diapers each time. There are so many complex and debilitating cases in Gaza that need continuous support. This past visit we supplied Saeed with Ceralac, diapers, hygiene wipes, all his medication and a fun visit with our nurse, costing 1,530 shekels or nearly $510. Saeed needs at home physiotherapy in order to improve his body’s spasticity so he’s not in constant pain. Iman at just 6 years old is suffering from extreme malnutrition and cerebral palsy. During the genocide, her parents already lost two sons to the same condition and severe acute malnutrition. No parent should have to bury their children while still fighting every day to keep another alive. Help now: On May 6, The Sameer Project supported Iman’s family in Khan Younis with a new tent that we installed, a mattress, blanket, milk, and diapers - essentials that become lifesaving in conditions where families have been stripped of nearly everything and have a child with disabilities to care for. The total cost for this shelter and support was $267 including the 11% commission fees. Survival for children with disabilities and chronic conditions becomes even more dangerous under siege, displacement, and starvation. A week and a half ago, we were able to source Cerelac. This powdered formula is usually used as a transitional meal for babies who have been reliant on breast milk but before they can digest puréed food. But now, it’s used to provide nutrition to any malnourished baby, someone with an injury who cannot eat, and children with disabilities. The Sameer Project provided 41 cans of Cerelac to babies and medical cases in the Refaat Alareer Camp. As a reminder, the Refaat Alareer Camp is a medical camp, so we shelter and provide for critical cases, many who are awaiting evacuation. Each can of Cerelac is nearly $85 after paying in cash with a 40% withdrawal fee. The insane prices are due to scarcity of the product since baby formula and nutritional supplements are being held at the border by the occupation. The occupation has created an entire population of Palestinians in Gaza who need around the clock care as they are paralyzed, quadriplegic, in comas, or vegetative states due to brain damage either from blunt-force trauma or inhaling toxic chemicals. They need special medical support that is expensive and also not easy to find. This is the case for Ibrahim who was a normal teenage boy when a bombing occurred infront of him and a fragment smashed into his head. Now Ibrahim is bedridden, unresponsive, cannot speak. One of the patients that The Sameer Project had supported continuously was little Saadallah who sadly passed away last December from malnourishment. Eight months later, and in more dire times, his only brother is also malnourished. Help us support malnutrition cases: This mother had the pain of losing her baby, and now the stress and fear of seeing her older son suffer from the lack of food. The Sameer Project visited the now family of 3 to provide nutritional support. We gave a vegetable parcel for $114 including 10% bank transfer fees, tuna for $15 per can after 45% cash commission, and red and green nutritional suppliants ranging from $2.5-$12 each. And we will of course be back to supply this family with more as one visit does not help a child get out of the grips of malnutrition caused by a man-made famine.
