We asked Bridgit Mendler about the vision for Northwood. "We need a global network because satellites orbit the Earth, requiring contact locations everywhere." @zebulgar @bridgitmendler @NorthwoodSpace @SpaceX Just imagine if @bridgitmendler and @elonmusk had a baby 😂 … wait, I think I’ve just found a solution to solving all the worlds problems 😮

“we’ll have to have some sort of Universal Basic Income (UBI)” Elon Musk But who is going to pay? We believe our data! HUDI = Human Data Income We are building a Universal Basic Income based on our data. Our data is our asset, the new oil, but we have no transparency nor profit from it. Help us build the Human Data Income: we made great progress, but it’s just the beginning!

Elon at Davos: "SpaceX, within a few years, will be launching solar-powered AI satellites." Last week, early SpaceX engineer Scott Nolan explained the logic behind Elon's solar AI vision: "Solar obviously takes a lot more area on the ground, but there is plenty of area for that in general. The missing piece was really storage." "Solar is inherently cyclical. To smooth it out, you need very cheap grid-scale or at least gigawatt-scale storage. Batteries or other forms. We haven't had that yet at a cost point that I think can compete with nuclear. That could change, and that would be great. But for now, in the foreseeable future on Earth, it's nuclear." "Now, when we talk about in-orbit, it's a whole different ballgame. If you have very cheap launch capacity, if your GPUs don't weigh very much, which they don't, and they're high-value, you could potentially put all of that in orbit, have your solar panel completely in sun-sync, and solve the battery issue. The one remaining piece is — you've got a lot of incident solar energy, and you're going to run those GPUs, how do you cool them? I think that's the piece that people are going to be working on for the next few years."

Bridgit Mendler on how Northwood is fixing the space economy's ground infrastructure problem: "The problem that we're solving is for every satellite, it requires a connection point back to Earth so that they can control the spacecraft." "That point of contact on Earth is called the ground infrastructure." "If you don't have it, you don't have a space mission." "It literally is just like a rock in space you're doing nothing with." "There was this whole boom around spacecraft manufacturing." "And interestingly what started becoming the longest pole in the tent was just getting the point of contact on the ground to connect with." "You could build a satellite and launch it faster than you could actually connect with it from the ground." "Which just seemed absurd." Bridgit Mendler with Erik Torenberg

SpaceX now operates the largest satellite constellation in Earth orbit Starlink today: • ~65–70% of all active satellites around Earth • ~9,500 active satellites in orbit • ~8,500+ fully operational, delivering real broadband worldwide • Speeds: 200–400 Mbps typical with ~30 ms latency • Tonight: Falcon 9 adds 29 more satellites And this is just the beginning The FCC approved 7,500 additional Gen2 satellites, bringing the total to 15,000 This means better global coverage, higher speeds, and support for direct-to-cell connectivity From remote villages to oceans and skies, Starlink is reshaping global connectivity at a scale never seen before SpaceX is building planet-scale infrastructure that will accelerate human progress on Earth like never before

Bridgit Mendler on why the space economy is like the early internet: "I get really inspired by the analogy especially thinking about, you know, for folks that were early with the internet." "There's no way they would've foreseen what the internet is today." "But they were betting on a direction and they were setting up a model that would basically unlock a lot of innovation." "A year ago today, would we think that everybody would be talking about orbital data centers? No way." Bridgit Mendler of Northwood with Erik Torenberg

.Northwood recently announced Prism, a new satellite ground antenna to significantly increase its ground station network capacity. Bridgit Mendler: "Today, what that looks like is addressing the use cases of today. That's something we fundamentally believe in — let's start with the users that are here now that have capacity shortages. So we start out in frequency bands like S, X and Ka. Over the next two years, we're going to be driving to 100 Gbps on that same antenna formulation. And then ultimately driving towards capacity that can kind of rival an example of an internet peering exchange."

STARLINK QUIETLY BUILDS THE BIGGEST NETWORK EARTH HAS EVER SEEN Starlink has now placed roughly 9,400 satellites into orbit, making it the largest satellite constellation ever assembled. Nothing else comes close. At any moment, thousands of active satellites are circling the planet, delivering broadband to places that traditional infrastructure never reached. That includes rural towns, offshore vessels, aircraft, disaster zones, and research stations where fiber is impossible and cell towers do not exist. For many users, Starlink is not a backup connection. It is the first reliable one they have ever had. The system has already proven its value during natural disasters, wars, and power outages, where ground networks fail first. Schools, hospitals, emergency crews, and small businesses now rely on a signal coming straight from orbit. SpaceX continues launching new satellites every week, steadily upgrading capacity and performance while expanding coverage. More launches are planned, but the system is already operating at a scale that would have sounded unrealistic a decade ago. Either way, not a future concept. The network is live, global, and growing, and it is already changing how the world stays connected. Source: X Freeze,Celestrak

.Bridgit Mendler on the founding thesis of Northwood. "We really were recognizing the same problem, that networking for the space economy is really what drives its value. And there's a significant bottleneck, and that bottleneck actually is not in space. It's actually on Earth. The way that you actually solve that networking problem for space is through introducing a model that gets you to the scale that you need, not just for one individual company or a mission, but for the industry overall." Elon Musk: The single biggest thing you can do to lift people out of poverty is giving them an internet connection We can provide low-cost, high-bandwidth internet to parts of the world that don't have it, or where it’s very expensive I think the single biggest thing you can do to lift people out of poverty and help them is giving them an internet connection because once you have the internet connection, you can learn anything for free on the internet and you can also sell your goods and services to the global market SpaceX has a very dominant position in space launches. So, of the mass launch to orbit this year, SpaceX will probably do 90% At this point, maybe approaching 80% of all active satellites in orbit are SpaceX, and they're providing high-bandwidth global connectivity throughout the world

Our Mars Telecommunications Network solution accommodates the proven Electra UHF radio with no modifications. Because we can operate Electra in a lower orbit, we're uniquely positioned to meet the essential need for reliable UHF relay from assets on the Martian surface or in the Martian atmosphere. That matters for ongoing missions like the Curiosity and Perseverance rovers, and also for future missions like Skyfall that need reliable communication with Earth without requiring unrealistically high power or high-precision antenna pointing.

Today, SpaceX successfully deployed 20 actual Starlink V3 satellites for the first time ever. Starship V3 can hold up to 60 of these satellites. Each Starlink V3 satellite offers 1 Tbps of downlink capacity, so a single Starship launch can add up to 60 Tbps of total downlink capacity to the network which is more than 20x what a Falcon 9 delivers today with V2 satellites. Insane scale. V3 will also enable 5G high-bandwidth direct-to-cell connectivity anywhere in the world. After deployment, SpaceX successfully made contact with all 20 Satellites! Successful day.

$ASTS is down over 12% because the market still struggles to value what the company is trying to build in the new space economy. They're trying to turn satellites into cell towers in space by letting normal phones connect directly to coverage without a dish, special hardware or new SIM card. Instead of selling directly to consumers, it sells satellite capacity to carriers meaning AST essentially provides the sky and carriers provide the customer relationship. The upside is a global coverage layer built on top of the existing mobile ecosystem.

We asked Topher Haddad about dead satellites. "In low earth orbit (LEO), they stay in space for 50-100 years." "In very low earth orbit (VLEO) where Albedo operates, it's a matter of weeks or days. It's a much more sustainable place to be."

We asked rahul about the global reach of @ChatGPTApp and the emphasis on personality in AI models. "When you want to get to the one to like the remaining 90% of the users, do you want a model that thinks for longer? You want more personality?" "They definitely leaned in on personality, which I think is interesting." "It's kind of different than a (social media) feed in some ways because you have this person you talk to. It's like a relationship and then it just switches up on how it talks to you."
