We compiled reactive JavaScript into a cartridge. The same Vue component now runs on a 2KB RAM NES and a Game Boy Advance. No JavaScript engine. No GC. The computed values and UI effects are compiled directly into bare-metal C. This is Pocket Vapor. ⚡️

here's a small project i put together recently - a custom "bare-metal" protected-mode x86 NES emulator. it fits into 1MB RAM and loads ROMs from a floppy disk, no OS required. if you want to turn your old PC into an awkward NES clone with bad sound emulation then look no further.

Javascript, Ruby, and Go all use garbage collectors for memory management. But did you know your SSD has a garbage collector (GC) too? SSDs with high write/delete traffic are constantly being reorganized by the GC, which is built directly into the firmware running on the SSD controller. This is one of the reasons why sequential writes are still preferable to random, even if you aren't using a spinning disk.

Super Smash Bros. 64, running natively on iOS and iPadOS for the first time. Not an emulator. BrawlerPad is built on BattleShip, which already supplied the SSB64 source-port core, Apple Metal path, and SDL controller/audio stack. BattleShip ran on Apple Silicon macOS and Android. There had never been a public iOS or iPadOS port. Now there is. The game logic is compiled into a native ARM64 app and runs through BattleShip/libultraship’s Metal/Fast3D path. No N64 hardware is simulated, and no ROM is interpreted at runtime. Smash deserves a controller, so BrawlerPad supports physical controllers through the same input path as the game. Touch works too. I used Codex 5.6 Sol on the iOS integration. Full build guide and source below.

We wanted to show the performance and the insane power of the Static Hermes native FFI. But we don't yet support the all language features needed to compile React Native (soon though!), so we improvised. We imported the bindings for DearImGui (a popular C++ imperative game UI library that renders meshes), and Sokol (an amazing lightweight 3D backend in C) and wrote a small demo. "Imperative UI" means that the entire UI and the state of the screen is recreated on every frame, which suits our purposes to demonstrate SH very well. The demo runs 100% compiled native code. JavaScript runs in every frame and recreates the entire state of the screen. It is portable to all platforms, though the screen layout is not optimized for phone. We wrote the demo in C++ and in JS, to compare, and they both ran with the same performance. In the attached videos you can see the demo running at the stable screen refresh rate - 120Hz on my Mac, 60Hz on a old Moto G5 phone. It includes some widgets, an n-body simulation of planets, a playable game demo, etc.

I've integrated fluids into my physics engine. Fluids are made of the same particles as solid matter, but computed differently. Phase change is seamless, matter melts and hardens back on temperature change. It runs fast, and world size limits are wider than any game would need.

Inspired by Ammaar Reshi getting C&C Generals running natively on iPad, I did the same for Warcraft II using Codex 5.6 Sol. It's the open-source Stratagus/Wargus engine compiled for ARM64, rendering through Metal via SDL2. No emulator, no x86, no streaming from a Mac. Campaigns, skirmish, and save/load all work, with touch controls. First time I've seen Warcraft II run natively on iPad. Open sourcing it all below.

Anders Hejlsberg(Anders Hejlsberg) - creator of C#, TypeScript, Turbo Pascal & Delphi - tells us how TypeScript was born: “The world started building larger and larger applications in JavaScript. We saw that externally, but also internally. One of the trigger events was when the outlook team came to see the C# team and asked us whether we would pretty please productize this thing called Script#. And we go, well, what is Script#? It's this cross compiler that allows you to cross compile C# into JavaScript such that you can basically treat JavaScript as an instruction language and run your C# apps in a browser. Why would anyone want to do that? Well, because then you can get a grownup programming language with grownup tooling. You can use Visual Studio, you can have projects. You can do all of these wonderful things that you can't do with JavaScript because JavaScript is just the scripting language with shitty tooling. And we thought, well, perhaps a better approach would be to fix JavaScript. I mean, surely you're not going to be best of breed in the JavaScript ecosystem by telling people to write in a different programming language”

It runs great on iPhone and iPad! The game is compiled as a native ARM64 app and rendered with WebGPU through Metal. No N64 hardware is being simulated, no N64 instructions are interpreted at runtime, and nothing is streamed from a Mac. This is a racing game, so controller support was non-negotiable. Pair a controller and play with native analog input. I used Sol 5.6 and Deepseek-V4-Flash to build the Apple layer. Open sourcing it all below.

I used Codex 5.6 Sol to get RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 running natively on iPad. This is built on OpenRCT2, the open-source engine their team has poured years into. I compiled it to a native ARM64 iPad app and built the touch controls on top. No emulator, no x86, no streaming from a Mac. Coaster building, scenarios, and park management all work by touch. First time I've seen RCT2 run natively on iPad. Open sourcing it all below.
