We just launched a feature we began exploring a decade+ ago, but never released it. It was originally destined for Campfire, our chat tool. The feature is called Bonfire. Now that Campfire is built into Basecamp, Bonfire belongs there. And today it's live for all Basecamp 5 customers. What's... show more

This gave me Tweetdeck vibes. Good times.

Waiting ten years until the feature had the right home is a good lesson for me. Most of my ideas die in a notes app because I try to put them in the wrong product. Congrats on shipping Bonfire.

Can I add pings? So I can ping multiple people like this? In parallel?

Jason Fried15 hours ago

Not currently but I'd like to expand the panel options down the road. However, you can currently view two pings with two people simultaneously. You can have one open in the big view, and one open in the sidebar view.

Important lesson here: Save your ideas. Just because a feature doesn't fit your product today doesn't mean it won't be perfect for it later. Good Job!

There’s something really interesting about an idea surviving for a decade and eventually finding the right product context. Sometimes “not now” really is different from “not good.”

Wags15 hours ago

omg is this really how active chats look like? isnt that distracting and noisy?

Very ver rarely, but in this case, yes b/c it was about Rails World and everyone was very happy and cheering for everyone.

.DHH explains what his printer taught him about selling software: “The Brother HL-2340WD. That's the model number of my beloved printer. And the reason why it's so beloved is it was the first printer I ever bought that I just plugged in and it worked.” “There was no fucking firmware. There was no nothing. There was just a functionality.” “I print something out. I sign it. I scan it. That's the job. I am not interested in anything else this printer could conceivably do. I just want that to happen and I want it to happen consistently exactly the same way 10 years from now. This is a solved problem for me.” “I think about that and my relationship to the printer every single time we move things around in Basecamp. Because I know we have a huge contingency of Basecamp customers who treat Basecamp like the printer.” “They don't want all the new features that we're so excited about because it solves the one job that they have and that's enough.” “Normally what always happens in SaaS and in software is a new version comes out and everyone just has to get it. They're forced to upgrade to it.” “For Basecamp, we kept those old versions. The version we launched in 2004, we stopped selling in 2010. 16 years ago. We still have customers on it. As an individual business it's still making millions of dollars.”

We were recently down in Atlanta and got a chance to visit with a customer of ours, King of Pops (King of Pops) They've made a huge name for themselves in ATL serving fun & popsicles all over the city. And it was such a treat to find out their whole business runs on Basecamp! Their suppliers, photographers, designers, individual carts, and even yoga instructors are all working together in Basecamp. While we were down there we shot a video with them. And here it is: This is King of Pops, and how they use Basecamp to make it all come together.

A really lovely GRID VIEW is coming to Basecamp 5 shortly. We had a grid view in 4, but it wasn't any good and I didn't want to drag it into 5. Had we done that, we'd have called it done and never revisited. By intentionally leaving it out, we allowed pressure to build to bring it back. And with no legacy to battle or revamp, we were able to return to the drawing board and make something so much better, from scratch. Coming to a Basecamp near you. Soon.

Just recorded a casual walkthrough tour of our first ONCE product. It's called Campfire and it's a very simple, straightforward group chat tool for teams and businesses. Just the essentials without any of the bloat that's infected so many SaaS tools today. You'll pay Campfire once, download it, and run it on your own company server. No subscription. Installation will be pasting a single line in a terminal, and it'll do the rest. And you'll get all the code, too. The price? We'll be launching with an introductory price of just $299. Once. It's already in the hands of a few customers, and we'll be releasing it to a bunch more in the coming days. And soon it'll be available for anyone who wants it. We can't wait to get it out there for everyone! So, here's the walkthrough showing you how it works. Happy to answer any questions you might have below. Thanks for watching.

There have been calls for a replica mosque and anti-Muslim signage placed on a loyalist bonfire in Co Tyrone to be removed. It is understood the miniature structure was placed on the pyre in Moygashel on Wednesday. Two signs have also been placed on the bonfire reading “secure our borders” and “end the threat of radical Islam”.

I first saw Campfire in action in Daniel Vassallo's Small Bets community, and it immediately felt like what a chat app should be - you own the data, no per-seat pricing, and fully customizable. Now it's free and open source. I made a short video showing how to get it running on a $12 DigitalOcean droplet. Thanks DHH and Jason Fried for putting it back out into the world! Also, thank you Daniel Vassallo and Sahil Lavingia for nudging Campfire in this direction😊

The worst feature of most products is one of our best features: customer support. It's incredible how much better a product becomes when you have an incredibly helpful, friendly, experienced, and deeply knowledgeable team on-call, for you, whenever you need them. Huge bonus. We don't outsource support. We don't see it as a cost center. Outstanding support is an asset, not a liability. A number of our support folks have been with us for over a decade! That's longer than most tech companies have even been in business! And the same team that works on Basecamp works on HEY. It's all the same A-team. We WANT you to contact us. We WANT to talk to you. Get in touch. You'll see the difference.

Graham Platner: “We will not just fight the oligarchy, we will defeat the oligarchy. And we are going to defeat the political system it maintains. It is a system that is the politics of Susan Collins. A politics that turns politicians into millionaires but tells you to be grateful for crumbs. It is a lie intended to serve the billionaire class. It is the lie that there is always money for forever wars, but never money for our schools”

Just launched ClawWatch 2.0. So small, so smooth but incredibly powerful! It is not just a very smart agent, it is connected to all my other agents through messaging rooms. AND it has access to all the sensors on the watch for pulse, blood oxygen, body temperature, accelaration. So it knows what's happening in the world and in your body. And works together with our other agents to help you. Super cool, just beginning to learn what this combination enables it to do. It's on Github. Here's how it works:

A few months ago, ÐUTCH™ "mistakenly" showed a FROGE-wrapped Cybertruck on stream. Nobody knew what it was for. And it was never a mistake - it was planted. Today, it's a real prize in SZN 2. But the prize is only half the story. Next week, we reveal how you can win it.

PSNI moved in at the 11th hour. From the comments online Protestants and Catholics were united in their approval of the bonfire (never thought I’d see the day) - this is not acceptable when the goal is division. There has been numerous instances of controversy over the years with what was place on the bonfire but it was never to my mind dismantled - of course not - the goal here was always to fuel division……..people are easier to control and political parties are built on it.

ok, Suno just released a new AI music feature called "Covers" and it's pure magic It works with your voice. You sing into Suno, give it a prompt, and it transforms your vocals into full songs. It's like a musical collab with the AI Link to try below

Based on lots of beta feedback, the most requested missing feature of TanStack Table has been Cell Selection and Keyboard Navigation. And now, an official cellSelectionFeature has been added to V9! I originally started out thinking that we could just build an official example, showing you how to implement this stuff yourself, but then after I built it, I thought that it should at least be an official plugin. And then after just a couple hours more of refinement, I just ended up adding it as a stock feature. 😂 There are a couple reasons why this is now a new built-in stock feature: 1. In V9, all features are opt-in, so this doesn't bloat the js bundle for anyone not using it. 2. The keyboard navigation part of this feature is actually not a part of this TanStack Table feature... because that gets handled by TanStack Hotkeys! More on that down below 👇

A year ago today, I was entrusted to serve our country once again. Being First Lady is not just a privilege; it is a profound responsibility. As we continue on this journey together, we must remember that hope is a powerful force, and that our vision to create a brighter future for all is within reach.

I built my first native Mac app! It's called Coverage. It connects with whatever you're playing on Spotify and makes effects play on the album cover. This effect is called Sheet. And when I say I, you know of course that I mean Astra and I. I don't know how to make Mac apps. That doesn't matter anymore. I'll make a demo video soon about how it works and how I prompted Astra. But I can't now because I'm on a plane, and that would be weird for my seat mates. So I just asked Codex to add a new feature to Coverage. I had it make a video capturing how rad it looks.
