Next week world leaders will meet at #UNGA. World Health Organization (WHO)’s highlight will be the High-Level Meeting on Noncommunicable Diseases and Mental Health on 25 September. Noncommunicable diseases include 7 of the world’s top 10 causes of death. In addition, almost 1 billion people face mental health conditions. Countries that act decisively to #BeatNCDs will save millions of lives, protect families, cut health costs, and unlock economic growth.

Heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and respiratory diseases, as well as mental health conditions, impact the life and well-being of millions of people. In Small Island Developing States (SIDS), their impact is strongly felt, due to climate change, the commercial determinants of health, fragile economies and weakened health systems. World Health Organization (WHO), the #WorldBank and partners are supporting SIDS to reshape health systems and financing mechanisms to address the needs of people living with these conditions, and those at risk.

Dental caries, gum disease, tooth loss, and oral cancers affect nearly half of the world’s population. And yet, people continue to face challenges and inequalities in access to oral health care, particularly in low-income communities and other vulnerable groups. One of the best tools to mobilize domestic funding for health is applying health taxes on tobacco, alcohol and sugary drinks. While taxation reduces the consumption of these harmful products and therefore the disease burden associated with them, it also generates income for the government. Many countries have shown that this is a powerful tool for health: -The Philippines expanded health insurance to more than 15mn families. -Lithuania reduced all-cause mortality rate. -The UK reduced obesity rates among girls aged 10-11.
