In my experience, robot 'generalists' are often jacks of all trades but masters of none. In training across multiple tasks and environments, robot policies fail to generalize robustly and effectively to each particular test setting. What if at test time, we non-parametrically *retrieved* “relevant” data from the training set and used it to significantly improve the performance of few-shot imitation learning to be robust to various test time scenes. Notably, we are *not* collecting lots of new data, just training more on sub-components of the same training data! Now, we’re certainly not the first to suggest retrieval, but in our new work - STRAP, we show how retrieving relevant *sub-trajectories* from offline datasets can significantly increase data reuse across tasks, when paired with an appropriate metric space. We asked Mika Senghaas how RL environments need to change for better agents. His take: stop treating environments like static snapshots. Today, researchers manually define tasks and rewards. Prime Intellect is working toward a loop where agents solve tasks and help create harder ones. “Up to now, environments are still these static snapshots. The task in and of itself is sort of hard-coded.” “What gets really interesting is once we can fully close the loop.” “The policy you’re training is not only a solver... it also becomes an instance creating new tasks on the fly.”

Introducing EdgeBench, a benchmark designed to study how agents learn from environments over at least 12~72-hour runs. We find that performance follows a log-sigmoid function of environment interaction time with high precision. EdgeBench is built with three ingredients: - 🌍 Real & Diverse: 134 real-world tasks across 6 task categories, spanning scientific problems, professional knowledge work, software engineering, optimization, formal math, and games. - ⏳ Ultra-Long-Horizon: Each task supports 12–72 hours of agent work. Recorded human effort averages 57.2 hours. - 🔁 Informative Feedback: Agents receive real-world feedback for continuous improvement. After 38,000 hours of agent runs on EdgeBench, a scaling law for learning from environments emerges: - 📈 As agents interact with task environments over time, their aggregate performance is precisely fit by a log-sigmoid function. - 🧠 This phenomenon can be explained by an elegant theory of graph exploration. 🚀 New Paper: Pixel Reasoner 🧠🖼️ How can Vision-Language Models (VLMs) perform chain-of-thought reasoning within the image itself? We introduce Pixel Reasoner, the first open-source framework that enables VLMs to “think in pixel space” through curiosity-driven reinforcement learning. Current VLMs reason only in text — even when grounded in rich images or videos, their logical steps are verbalized in natural language. This restricts their ability to interrogate visual evidence and demonstrate how conclusions are drawn. 🔍 So we ask: What if we could make VLMs "show their work" by reasoning directly in the pixel space? Inspired by GPT-o3’s "think-in-image" ability, we propose a framework where VLMs use interactive visual operations — zoom, select-frame, highlight — to reason through complex visual inputs. To do this, we design a two-stage training process: Instruction tuning with synthesized visual reasoning traces. Reinforcement learning with curiosity-driven reward to balance exploration between pixel and text reasoning ✨ With this, Pixel Reasoner achieves near-SoTA performance on many information-rich multimodal benchmarks: 📊 84% on InfographicsVQA 🧠 84% on V* benchmark 🧩 74% on TallyQA-Complex It also achieves strong accuracy of 68% on MVBench (a video benchmark). VITA Towards Open-Source Interactive Omni Multimodal LLM discuss: The remarkable multimodal capabilities and interactive experience of GPT-4o underscore their necessity in practical applications, yet open-source models rarely excel in both areas. In this paper, we introduce VITA, the first-ever open-source Multimodal Large Language Model (MLLM) adept at simultaneous processing and analysis of Video, Image, Text, and Audio modalities, and meanwhile has an advanced multimodal interactive experience. Starting from Mixtral 8x7B as a language foundation, we expand its Chinese vocabulary followed by bilingual instruction tuning. We further endow the language model with visual and audio capabilities through two-stage multi-task learning of multimodal alignment and instruction tuning. VITA demonstrates robust foundational capabilities of multilingual, vision, and audio understanding, as evidenced by its strong performance across a range of both unimodal and multimodal benchmarks. Beyond foundational capabilities, we have made considerable progress in enhancing the natural multimodal human-computer interaction experience. To the best of our knowledge, we are the first to exploit non-awakening interaction and audio interrupt in MLLM. VITA is the first step for the open-source community to explore the seamless integration of multimodal understanding and interaction. While there is still lots of work to be done on VITA to get close to close-source counterparts, we hope that its role as a pioneer can serve as a cornerstone for subsequent research.

We are releasing 4M-21 with a permissive license, including its source code and trained models. It's a pretty effective multimodal model that solves 10s of tasks & modalities. See the demo code, sample results, and the tokenizers of diverse modalities on the website. IMO, the multitask learning aspect of multimodal models has really taken a step forward. We can train a single model on many diverse tasks with ~SOTA accuracy. But a long way to go in terms of transfer/emergence. 🌐 ⌨️ Joint work w/ EPFL Apple.

Collaborative Score Distillation for Consistent Visual Synthesis paper page: Generative priors of large-scale text-to-image diffusion models enable a wide range of new generation and editing applications on diverse visual modalities. However, when adapting these priors to complex visual modalities, often represented as multiple images (e.g., video), achieving consistency across a set of images is challenging. In this paper, we address this challenge with a novel method, Collaborative Score Distillation (CSD). CSD is based on the Stein Variational Gradient Descent (SVGD). Specifically, we propose to consider multiple samples as "particles" in the SVGD update and combine their score functions to distill generative priors over a set of images synchronously. Thus, CSD facilitates seamless integration of information across 2D images, leading to a consistent visual synthesis across multiple samples. We show the effectiveness of CSD in a variety of tasks, encompassing the visual editing of panorama images, videos, and 3D scenes. Our results underline the competency of CSD as a versatile method for enhancing inter-sample consistency, thereby broadening the applicability of text-to-image diffusion models.

JARVIS-1: Open-World Multi-task Agents with Memory-Augmented Multimodal Language Models paper page: Achieving human-like planning and control with multimodal observations in an open world is a key milestone for more functional generalist agents. Existing approaches can handle certain long-horizon tasks in an open world. However, they still struggle when the number of open-world tasks could potentially be infinite and lack the capability to progressively enhance task completion as game time progresses. We introduce JARVIS-1, an open-world agent that can perceive multimodal input (visual observations and human instructions), generate sophisticated plans, and perform embodied control, all within the popular yet challenging open-world Minecraft universe. Specifically, we develop JARVIS-1 on top of pre-trained multimodal language models, which map visual observations and textual instructions to plans. The plans will be ultimately dispatched to the goal-conditioned controllers. We outfit JARVIS-1 with a multimodal memory, which facilitates planning using both pre-trained knowledge and its actual game survival experiences. In our experiments, JARVIS-1 exhibits nearly perfect performances across over 200 varying tasks from the Minecraft Universe Benchmark, ranging from entry to intermediate levels. JARVIS-1 has achieved a completion rate of 12.5% in the long-horizon diamond pickaxe task. This represents a significant increase up to 5 times compared to previous records. Furthermore, we show that JARVIS-1 is able to self-improve following a life-long learning paradigm thanks to multimodal memory, sparking a more general intelligence and improved autonomy.
