HISTORIC #TORNADO INTERCEPT southwest of Frankfort, Kansas! We launched a sensor into the tornado and it went up past 10,000 feet and did at least three revolutions around the tornado. Incredible data on this sensor #stormchasing #Dominator

Check out this incredible composite video of the #tornado intercept near St. Libory, Nebraska yesterday including our weather station data, video and radar loop. We believe this violent #tornado happened right when the cold front gave the storm a kick in the ass. This accelerated the tornado forward speed and sent it due east. WE GOT DATA! Check out this first-ever 3-D data set of wind and thermodynamics from the ground up from inside a #tornado! With a peak wind of 131 mph measured above ground, and greater than 115 mph at ground level outside of suction vortices, it appears this tornado was at least an EF2. This data set sheds light on the 3-D structure of the dynamic pipe from ground through the vent, showing a high swirl ratio tornado here. The vent is the powerful updraft at the upper reaches of the dynamic pipe, the strength of which is proportional to the ceiling of the tornado cyclone below. We also computed a pressure perturbation with height, with two maximum deficits happening at launch and farther above ground in the dynamic pipe. Notice the little loop the parachute probe made at the backside of the #tornado at the same time as an RH decrease. We do not believe this is a subvortex here so far above ground. RAW video of the air cannon launch into EF5-strength suction vortex on May 20 this year. I have finally analyzed the live data from the probe, which shows an ~80 mb drop from the Dominator, outside of the tornado, to the core of the tornado. A second dramatic dip in pressure is attributed purely to vertical velocity as the parachute probe lofts upward through the #tornado. I am working to estimate the height of the probe from our 2-3 camera angles, since the GPS failed. We are still working to recover this parachute probe!

Powell: The point is that we are starting to see layoffs and important gatherers of data are saying that they are having to cut back on the size of their surveys and that will lead to more volatility in the surveys. I think we should take a step back. From our standpoint, having really good data on the state of the economy at any given time is a huge public good.

We are finalizing the rebuild of the Dominator 3 and Will Clay has put the science mission on his back! We will be launching dozens of sensors into the tornadoes this year for real-time tornado intensity. LocalMan Weather and I have been grinding out the rest of the Team Dominator speaking tour, with our next event tomorrow night in Effingham, Illinois. On March 1 we will return to the heart of Tornado Alley to test sensors and gear up for the active pattern ahead. 2026 will be a BIG year for #tornado science! Never stop chasing
