Different face same rubbish. "Homegrown clean energy creates jobs," says the Energy Secretary. She’s correct … In CHINA! Once a wind or solar farm is built, it employs few people. The real jobs are in manufacturing the turbines, panels, batteries, inverters, cabling, concrete etc and processing and mining critical minerals. Which is why CHINA is having a jobs boom (Insert me weeping) China manufactures most of the world's solar panels, leads battery production and dominates the refining of critical minerals and its supply chain. So what she means is WE are subsidising CHINESE jobs! Then *sigh*, electricity is only 20% of Britain's total energy use. The other 80% is mostly made up of transport fuels, heating and industry. Importing more Chinese infrastructure doesn't make us energy secure. It makes China richer while she congratulates herself on creating jobs that mostly aren't here. *sob*

So, if you burnt all of the mass of the solar system, then the total energy produced by the sun would still round up to 100%. If you just burnt Earth, the whole planet, and burnt Jupiter, which is very big and quite challenging to burn, turn Jupiter into a thermonuclear reactor, the sun is 99.8% of the mass of the solar system and everything else is in the miscellaneous category. Basically, no matter what you do, total energy produced in our solar system rounds up to 100% from the sun. You could even throw another Jupiter in, so we're going to snag a Jupiter from somewhere else, you could teleport two more Jupiters into our solar system, burn them, and the sun would still round up to 100%. As long as you're at 99.6%, you're still rounding up to 100%. Maybe that gives some perspective of why solar is really the thing that matters. And, as soon as you start thinking about things at a grander scale, like Kardashev Scale 2 civilizations, it becomes very, very obvious. I'm not saying anything that's new, by the way. Anyone who studies physics has known this for a very long time. In fact, Kardashev, a Russian physicist who came up with this idea, I think, in the 1960s, just as a way to classify civilizations, where Kardashev Scale 1 would be, you've harnessed most of the energy of the planet, Kardashev Scale 2, you've harnessed most of the energy of your sun, Kardashev 3, you've harnessed most of the energy of a galaxy. Last week, early SpaceX engineer Scott Nolan explained the logic behind Elon's solar AI vision: "Solar obviously takes a lot more area on the ground, but there is plenty of area for that in general. The missing piece was really storage." "Solar is inherently cyclical. To smooth it out, you need very cheap grid-scale or at least gigawatt-scale storage. Batteries or other forms. We haven't had that yet at a cost point that I think can compete with nuclear. That could change, and that would be great. But for now, in the foreseeable future on Earth, it's nuclear." "Now, when we talk about in-orbit, it's a whole different ballgame. If you have very cheap launch capacity, if your GPUs don't weigh very much, which they don't, and they're high-value, you could potentially put all of that in orbit, have your solar panel completely in sun-sync, and solve the battery issue. The one remaining piece is — you've got a lot of incident solar energy, and you're going to run those GPUs, how do you cool them? Supply surges and wholesale prices collapse as a result. Then the sun sets, supply vanishes, and so prices rise. But the panels are no longer producing electricity to sell at those higher prices. Wind does the same thing. When it blows, turbines generate together and crush the price they receive. Then whenever the wind drops, supply tightens and prices rise. Renewables 'cannibalize' their own revenues. High output equals low prices. High prices means low output. The economics depend on subsidies, guaranteed contracts, curtailment payments, and backup generation. The more weather-dependent power you add, the bigger this system flaw becomes.

Many have whistleblown to me that diesel generators are brought into solar complexes to bump up their numbers / fill in for the 16 hours a day they aren’t generating power IF the sun is out. For anyone familiar with Upstate NY… the sun is never out here. Ever. We have similar sunshine to Seattle, Washington. That’s why commercial solar only generates at 15% of its annual potential here. It’s not a grid fix and the powers-that-be know it.

He has solar panels & battery, heats his home with the heat pump, charges his electric car at home - and drives 12,000 miles a year. And pays nothing for his energy. With solar to generate his electricity, battery to shift it to the evening & sell it to the grid, and a smart tariff to optimise all his electricity. This is the sort of stuff the fossil fuel industry know is coming and its one reason you see such vitriol. Of course, we'll still use fossil fuels for many years - but by ditching petrol/diesel and gas, people like Craig are living the cheaper, cleaner future and we shouldn't allow incumbency to slow it down.

Musk: “What would the Earth be without the sun? The Earth would be a frozen dark ice ball at roughly three degrees above absolute zero.” Three degrees above absolute zero. No light. No liquid water. No life. Not a worse version of Earth. A dead rock drifting through nothing. That is the default state of this planet without a single energy source. Everything else is commentary. The sun is not one option on a menu of power generation. It is the only reason biology exists here at all. Musk: “Because of the sun, we are at a quite a nice temperature, quite pleasant. Sort of roughly 300 degrees above absolute zero.” A 297-degree window between civilization and extinction. Every ecosystem, every economy, every human body operates inside that margin. The entire project of life fits between those numbers. And somehow the species looked at the source of all of it and decided it was a secondary energy option. Musk: “The sun powers, almost the entire ecosystem is solar-powered.” Every fossil fuel on Earth is stored solar energy. Oil is ancient sunlight captured by organisms, compressed by geology, buried for millions of years. Musk: “The sun powers, almost the entire ecosystem is solar-powered.” Every fossil fuel on Earth is stored solar energy. Oil is ancient sunlight captured by organisms, compressed by geology, buried for millions of years. Drilling for it is harvesting the sun’s output with a 300-million-year delay and a catastrophic loss in efficiency. The original source is still running. It will run for another five billion years. It delivers more energy to Earth’s surface in one hour than humanity consumes in an entire year. One hour versus one year. That is the ratio the world is ignoring. The argument against solar was never physics. It was cost, storage, and scale. Those are engineering problems. Engineering problems get solved. They always do. The compute demands of the next decade alone will require energy production at a scale fossil fuels physically cannot reach. The intelligence explosion does not run on oil. It runs on electricity. The cheapest and most abundant source of electricity is already overhead. It has been overhead for 4.6 billion years. We do not need to discover a new energy source. We need to stop ignoring the one that powers everything we have ever built. The star is right there. The only question left is how fast we build the infrastructure to capture it.

Spencer Pratt drags Bill Maher out of his liberal bubble and brought him back down to earth. Maher was annoyed that Pratt didn’t know the specifics about taxes on solar powered energy, but Pratt humbled him with the REAL problems Angelenos care about. MAHER: “This is a state that is constantly overthinking everything, and over regulating everything.” “Trust me, I know. I did whole bits about how it took me three years to get the solar turned on.” “Solar! Wind and solar don't work at night or when the wind isn't blowing. Australia is told the solution is batteries! Real world experience shows that batteries are too expensive, too slow to build and don't last long enough to support a grid. During this session with the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA), I revisited the status of the eight large-scale battery storage projects funded in 2022, noting that $176 million had been allocated but none had completed construction by February. I was told that while all projects are progressing, some face challenges like grid connection issues. I highlighted the significant cost increase from $2.7 billion to $3.1 billion and questioned the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of these batteries compared to coal-fired power stations. I also raised concerns about the stability and reliability of renewable energy sources like solar and wind, and the additional costs associated with making them grid-compatible. Additionally, I asked ARENA about their responsibilities and the financial transparency of their operations. I emphasised the high cost of electricity in Australia compared to countries like China and criticised the impact of net-zero policies on manufacturing. We need to ditch net-zero. Use the cheap resources we have in Australia's ground for Australians first!
