Well this is both hilarious… and depressing at the same time. Trump’s Interior Secretary just discovered that the sun sets at night… Doug Burgum said: “When the sun goes down, solar panels produce zero electricity. The whole machine doesn't work.” Then, Rep. Jared Huffman literally held a battery up...

The alternative, is of course, to invade another country where the sun is still shining. It's always sunny in the Middle East and Africa…

Jesus effing Christ, when did Conservative American (and Canadian as well) politicians get so stupid? Did they get a defective education or something?

More evidence of another person of my gender, that has been given an interior secretary position that he is clearly not qualified for. People like him have been promoted his entire life, even though their are other people far more qualified and educated

In 100 years historians will talk about how just as the British Empire got left behind as it held onto coal as the world went to oil and gas, the US not only didn’t move into renewables at scale, but they handed the entire industry to our biggest competitor to sell to the world.

Somebody else said everyone’s worried about China leaving us behind with military tech or whatever. Where’s the urgency about getting left behind by renewable energy. Or any energy production at all? China’s building solar, wind, nuclear, all of it.

@Logically_JC The Trump petrochemical cabinet is filled with dumb people. Solar farms & offshore wind farms work. In Denmark the offshore wind farms, also create a safe reef like habitat for fish. In Schleswig-Holstein they have solar panels along railway and freeways. Plus this experiment 👇

Wow just wow. “That’s why they’re cleaning our clock on clean energy” ? China has SIX TIMES MORE COAL FIRED GENERATING PLANTS THAN THE REST IF THE WORLD COMBINED! And 300 new ones under construction…. Typical Democratic logic. Know nothing and lie about it

They will stick with being “technically correct” - a solar panel produces 0 in the dark… What they obfuscate and ignore is that it is in a system that has storage, so the system can still produce

In Texas, wind replaces solar power at night, leaving only small gaps in early evening and early morning. But also, gas plants can be powered up quickly, and Ercot has pretty good predictions of what is needed for next 24 hours. Renewable electricity saves a lot of gas.

This is why politicians should retire at 65. Just like the rest of us. But even more important for them. Waiting for them to die is a terrible idea. But still, I can’t fucking wait. That generation was done 30 years ago. They just haven’t accepted reality yet

China and Europe have huge batteries. Its called pumped storage. They dominate both construction and operation. Two reservoirs ideally separated by 3,000ft. Pump the water up the hill during the day. Release during the night powering turbines. You can also buy nuclear baseload in the middle of the night when its cheap and sell it in the afternoon when air conditioning kicks in. In some cases the nuke will pay you to take their electricity. All depends on the intraday load patterns. Google also options theory and game theory. You'll need it to go further.

Burgum's comment is correct, Huffman's comment is childishly stupid. Batteries simply release energy produced by a generator. Eventually they run out of electricity if they are not recharged by something that produces electricity, in this case solar panels. You either understand this, and are just another dishonest hack, or you are just not too smart. You can decide which title suits you best.

Nobody is talking about “shutting down base load” except him. Yes, we need a grid that is optimized for both average and peak electricity demand but this is not a new, unsolved problem. The industry has been doing this for decades. It’s a red herring.

So if I hook up a bunch of batteries and attach them to my house they will produce electricity and save me money? Huffman basically said batteries produce electricity, is there any way he can produce something that shows us all how to make that happen?

Elon Musk: Everything is solar power. The rest is noise. “The sun is about 99.8% of the mass of the solar system. Jupiter's about 0.1% and everything else is in the remaining 0.1%, and we are much less than 0.1%. So, if you burnt all of the mass of the solar system, then the total energy produced by the sun would still round up to 100%. If you just burnt Earth, the whole planet, and burnt Jupiter, which is very big and quite challenging to burn, turn Jupiter into a thermonuclear reactor, the sun is 99.8% of the mass of the solar system and everything else is in the miscellaneous category. Basically, no matter what you do, total energy produced in our solar system rounds up to 100% from the sun. You could even throw another Jupiter in, so we're going to snag a Jupiter from somewhere else, you could teleport two more Jupiters into our solar system, burn them, and the sun would still round up to 100%. As long as you're at 99.6%, you're still rounding up to 100%. Maybe that gives some perspective of why solar is really the thing that matters. And, as soon as you start thinking about things at a grander scale, like Kardashev Scale 2 civilizations, it becomes very, very obvious. I'm not saying anything that's new, by the way. Anyone who studies physics has known this for a very long time. In fact, Kardashev, a Russian physicist who came up with this idea, I think, in the 1960s, just as a way to classify civilizations, where Kardashev Scale 1 would be, you've harnessed most of the energy of the planet, Kardashev Scale 2, you've harnessed most of the energy of your sun, Kardashev 3, you've harnessed most of the energy of a galaxy. Now we're only about 1% or a few percent of Kardashev Scale 1 right now, optimistically. But as soon as you go to Kardashev Scale 2, where you're talking about the power of the sun, then you're really just saying everything is solar power and the rest is in the noise. Like, the sun produces about a billion times, or call it well over a billion times more energy than everything on Earth combined.” All-In Podcast, October 31, 2025

Elon Musk just exposed the most catastrophic energy blindspot in the entire AI arms race. The West is still debating which twigs to burn. China is capturing the sun. Musk: “People just don’t understand how solar is everything. Compared to the sun, all other energy sources are like cavemen throwing some twigs into a fire.” Every natural gas plant. Every nuclear reactor. Every experimental fusion project being debated in Washington right now. Twigs. Musk: “We have a giant free fusion reactor that shows up every day. It’s farcical for us to create little fusion reactors.” And then he gave the most clarifying statistic in the entire energy debate. Musk: “The sun is over 99.8% of all mass in the solar system. Jupiter is around 0.1%. So even if you burnt Jupiter, the energy produced by the sun would still round up to 100%.” Musk: “And then if you teleported three more Jupiters into our solar system and burnt them too, it would still round up.” The sun is not an energy source. It is the only energy source. Everything else is rounding error. China already knows this. While American tech executives beg for permits to build natural gas plants, China crossed 1,000 gigawatts of installed solar capacity in 2025. More than the rest of the world combined. They are not holding summits about it. They are not commissioning reports about it. They are building it. Harvesting the free fusion reactor that arrives every morning at zero cost and feeding it directly into their AI data centers. The AI race is not an algorithm race. It is an electro-industrial race. You cannot build superintelligence without infinite compute. You cannot have infinite compute without infinite energy. And right now, the United States is losing the energy war while holding committee meetings about which twigs to burn next. China built the energy-compute flywheel. Cheap, scalable, infinite solar power feeding AI models at a fraction of the cost. Compounding every single day. The nation that captures the sun’s output will hold a permanent monopoly on global intelligence. The nation that doesn’t will spend the next decade trying to understand how it lost. Everyone else gets left holding the twigs.

Elon Musk has been saying the same thing for years. Humanity is still underestimating solar energy. Not underestimating it slightly. Fundamentally misunderstanding what it is. Musk: “What would the Earth be without the sun? The Earth would be a frozen dark ice ball at roughly three degrees above absolute zero.” Three degrees above absolute zero. No light. No liquid water. No life. Not a worse version of Earth. A dead rock drifting through nothing. That is the default state of this planet without a single energy source. Everything else is commentary. The sun is not one option on a menu of power generation. It is the only reason biology exists here at all. Musk: “Because of the sun, we are at a quite a nice temperature, quite pleasant. Sort of roughly 300 degrees above absolute zero.” A 297-degree window between civilization and extinction. Every ecosystem, every economy, every human body operates inside that margin. The entire project of life fits between those numbers. And somehow the species looked at the source of all of it and decided it was a secondary energy option. Musk: “The sun powers, almost the entire ecosystem is solar-powered.” Every fossil fuel on Earth is stored solar energy. Oil is ancient sunlight captured by organisms, compressed by geology, buried for millions of years. Drilling for it is harvesting the sun’s output with a 300-million-year delay and a catastrophic loss in efficiency. The original source is still running. It will run for another five billion years. It delivers more energy to Earth’s surface in one hour than humanity consumes in an entire year. One hour versus one year. That is the ratio the world is ignoring. The argument against solar was never physics. It was cost, storage, and scale. Those are engineering problems. Engineering problems get solved. They always do. The compute demands of the next decade alone will require energy production at a scale fossil fuels physically cannot reach. The intelligence explosion does not run on oil. It runs on electricity. The cheapest and most abundant source of electricity is already overhead. It has been overhead for 4.6 billion years. We do not need to discover a new energy source. We need to stop ignoring the one that powers everything we have ever built. The star is right there. The only question left is how fast we build the infrastructure to capture it.

Spencer Pratt drags Bill Maher out of his liberal bubble and brought him back down to earth. Maher was annoyed that Pratt didn’t know the specifics about taxes on solar powered energy, but Pratt humbled him with the REAL problems Angelenos care about. MAHER: “This is a state that is constantly overthinking everything, and over regulating everything.” “Trust me, I know. I did whole bits about how it took me three years to get the solar turned on.” “Solar! Something they want you to have!” PRATT: “But now they’re taxing you, I think, for having it.” MAHER: “They are?” PRATT: “I think so.” MAHER: “What do you mean you think so?! You have to know!” PRATT: “I don’t need to know about solar, you know?” “I need to focus on making sure the moms are safe and the animals are not being abused. That’s my party.” MAHER: “I know. but if you’re the mayor...” PRATT: “Solar panels, that’s going to be somebody I’m hiring. That’s my deputy mayor who’s going to worry about the solar panels.” MAHER: “No, Spencer. I got bad news. If you’re the mayor, you are going to have to learn some of these issues more intricately.” PRATT: “Solar panels...we’re about three years from worrying about solar panels.” “We need to get all of the naked drug addicts off of the sidewalks and then I can worry about solar panels.” MAHER: “We can’t walk and chew gum at the same time?” PRATT: “With the state of LA right now, solar panels, you’re gonna spit that gum out.”
