Howeever, Dune II is 1 younger than Mega-Lo-Mania and a whopping 3 years younger than Herzog Zwei, which is considered to be the origin of RTS gaming - which was confirmed by Warcraft, StarCraft, and Command & Conquer developers in retrospect. Technosoft (Japan) published their masterpiece in 1989 for the Sega Genesis. What I always found a bit curious are the many German words used in the game. Herzog Zwei translates to Duke Two (there was no Herzog Eins... Duke One), and the maps had German names as well. Did you play this one before Dune II?

Dune II (Westwood Studios) was released in 1992, and it cannot be overstated how much this game impacted, changed, and popularized RTS games. It felt like the floodgates opened after it paved the way for an entire genre. Yes, there were others before it, but in terms of depth, playability, graphics, cutscenes, three different (and playable) factions, and digitized speech, it was unbelievably awesome. I can only name a handful of games that captured me the way Dune II did - it was a rare gem. Controlling units individually feels tedious from today’s perspective, but it never bothered me back then. I guess you can’t miss what you don’t expect. Instead, I was totally hooked - not just on the game's concept, but also on how it was presented. For 1992, the graphics (for a strategy game) were impressive, the cutscenes had that Cinemaware quality, and the music and digitized speech added to the "I am right in the middle of this" vibe. Of course, I started with Atreides, but over time I - and probably you too - switched to the "dark side" and played Harkonnen and Ordos. The Harkonnen Devastator (epic name) was so badass. I know that Dune 2000 was released years later but I never felt it was a worthy sequel. A real Dune III would be a dream come true...

It was based on the Quake engine, and added some cool features such as basic RPG stats to grow more powerful in terms of hit points or mana, increasing with your experience level. You could pick one of four possible classes, each requiring a different style of play: Paladin, Necromancer, Crusader, and Assassin. Anyone remember General Zod? One of the last games of the Bitmap Brothers and also one of their best, in my opinion. Z from 1996 was such a blast. Yes, I know, Command & Conquer was published a year earlier and was more complex (and turned into a massive franchise), but I always felt that Z deserved more credit and got a bit lost in the shuffle. Great graphics, an epic soundtrack, and some fun units (who doesn't love the Psychos?) were sadly still not enough, and despite some excellent reviews, sales numbers were pretty low. Earlier games from the Bitmap Brothers, such as Speedball 2 or Xenon 2, were commercially much more successful. Maybe it was the fact that the RTS genre was already quite saturated (Dune II, Warcraft: Orcs & Humans, Command & Conquer), and that pushed Z into the offside a bit, who knows. Did you play it back in the day and liked it?

Today is the 20th birthday of The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-Earth II. Published by EA on March 3, 2006, it is set in Middle-Earth during the War of the Ring. It features Good and Evil campaigns with nine missions each, massive RTS battles, and heroes like Aragorn and the Witch-king. You can command six factions: Men of the West, Elves, Dwarves, Goblins, Isengard, and Mordor. It didn't introduce new features but followed essentially the same formula as other popular RTS games of its era. You build your base, research upgrades, build an army, and try to destroy your enemy. Done a gazillion times... but why reinvent the wheel if it's a proven concept? For LOTR fans it was certainly worth it, and given the success of the movie trilogy, it made a lot of sense to profit from the hype.

Centurion: Defender of Rome (1990) was seen by some as the spiritual successor to Defender of the Crown. One of the more obvious connections would be the graphic artist James Sachs, though Centurion didn't quite reach the same "wow" level in terms of graphics as Defender of the Crown did four years prior. You start as an officer in 275 BC with one legion, conquering provinces across Europe and North Africa to ultimately trying to ascend to Caesar. You also manage taxes, host "bread and circuses" like chariot races and gladiator fights (rather simple mini-games). The design and cutscenes seemed to be inspired by Ben-Hur and Spartacus. While this game didn't win any rewards or receive more than "just good" reviews, it still holds a special place in my heart. For its time it was pretty good, and the tactical options for each fight - though limited - kept you engaged and always trying to improve.

Imagine having two titles in your portfolio that are dubbed the "grandfather" and "father" of FPS games. And to then go full circle and end it with yet another iconic hit. id Software brought us Wolfenstein 3D (1992), the grandfather of FPS games. Then followed it up only a year later in 1993 with Doom, widely considered the father of all modern FPS games, due to its massive popularity, multiplayer deathmatch, and modding community - and defining the genre's mainstream popularity to this day. And if that wasn't enough, they gave us Quake in 1996. If there was ever a studio to not just create a genre but then to also dominate it for years and years, the vote would have to go to id Software, no? Sierra for adventures. MicroProse for simulations. id Software for FPS. Blizzard (or Westwood?) for RTS.

An oldie but goldie... and definitely needing a manual to have the slightest clue what was going on. Carrier Command (1988), developed by Realtime Games and published by Rainbird, blends RTS and simulation elements. You command the aircraft carrier ACC Epsilon in a future war to colonize a 64-island archipelago before a rival carrier does the same. You can attack by air (Manta) or land (Walrus) and drop command centres on neutral islands. The game switches between fleet management and direct vehicle control. The filled-polygon graphics (epic for the time!) and tactical elements made it one of the earliest true RTS games. It received excellent reviews, often in the high 90% range. A sequel, Battle Command, followed two years later.

Rainbow Islands (Taito, 1987) originally developed for arcades and later ported to a gazillion systems. How many colours would you you like? -- YES! Following the events of Bubble Bobble, Bubby and Bobby set out to defeat the "Dark Shadow" and rescue the Rainbow Islands. Everythinhg about this game is adorable, the over the top and super vibrant colours, the ever so cute soundtrack, the fact that you "kill" enemies with a rainbow (aww...), the brilliant gameplay, and the sheer joy to pick up all the bonuses and drops for extra points. The Amiga and Atari ST version were done by Graftgold (Andrew Braybrook) in perfect fashion. In all the magazines that I read and that you can still look up today, Rainbow Islands consistently gets a 90%+ score, excellent reviews and quotes like "highly addictive" and "one of the best games ever made". I couldn't agree more.

Rise of Nations (2003) is easily one of the best RTS games ever. It's maybe no surprise, since Brian Reynolds - the genius behind Civilization II and Alpha Centauri - created it. I sank countless hours into this one, an unspeakable amount really. It was an absolute blast in both single-player and multiplayer. In conversations about the the all-time greats, games mentioned are usually Dune II, Command & Conquer, Age of Empires, Warcraft, and StarCraft - and all deservedly so - but in my opinion Rise of Nations also belongs in that uppermost echelon of RTS games ever made. One of the features that felt more strategic were the visible influence of borders. You could only build inside your own territory, and expanding it was a core strategic layer. Entering enemy territory caused attrition (units slowly took damage over time), encouraging smart expansion and defense, you couldn't just blindly run in. It also had 18 unique civilizations, each had distinct Nation Powers and unique units (e.g., Romans got extra territory, Mongols had powerful cavalry, etc.), giving strong asymmetry without breaking balance - a very tough balancing act in any RTS game with such diverse civilizations. I would assume that you were of fan of RTS games during that era, you also invested a fair bit of your time into this one...

Karateka, released in 1984 for the Apple II by Jordan Mechner (while he was a Yale student!), stood out as a groundbreaking title for its era. My biggest achievement as a student was getting out of bed in time for the majority (not all) classes... The innovations included pioneering rotoscoped animation, where Mechner filmed himself performing karate moves on video, traced the frames by hand, and digitized them frame-by-frame for ultra-fluid, lifelike character movements. It was also one of the first games to use cinematic storytelling scenes, inspired by Akira Kurosawa films, and silent movies: wordless cutscenes with cross-cutting (such as showing the princess in peril or the villain's reactions), dramatic pauses and tracking shots. Mechner also had a sense of humor: The Apple II disk included an Easter egg: the game was single-sided but when you flipped the disk it would pay the game the full game upside-down and mirrored, causing players to call tech support in confusion.

Commandos 2: Men of Courage was released in 2001 by Pyro Studios and Eidos Interactive. Like its prequel (Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines), it lets you control a squad of elite soldiers fighting Nazi Germany and Japan between the years 1941 and 1944. Each of the nine commandos has unique skills, such as the Green Beret’s knife fighting, the Sniper’s precision shots, or the Sapper’s explosives. It was up to you how and when to use them to complete the missions. It still has some of the most beautiful graphics I have ever seen in an RTS from that era, with incredible environmental detail. Speaking of incredible - Commandos 2 was also incredibly tough. One mistake could alert everyone, and all hell would break loose. A very unforgiving game.

During the peak years of RTS games, one title stuck with me. It wasn't better than Age of Empires or StarCraft, but it had one of the coolest intros, an insane amount of units, and a great multiplayer mode: Empire Earth (2001) One particular feature that I loved was the massive time span it covered. The game had 14 epochs, which totaled 500,000 years! You started when humans barely walked and then nuked them to pieces in the Nano Age towards the end. The massive gaps between techs when reaching a new era before your friends was quite noticable and made for some hilarious fights. I don't really know what it was, but Empire Earth was simply fun... and if you tell me you don't get nerd chills at the end of the intro when the narrator utters the last words "EMPIRE EARTH!", then you're not a gamer :)

If I had to choose just one game (and no other ever again) to play for the rest of my life, I'd go with Civilization (MicroProse, 1991). You can argue some sequels were better (I can't deny that), but the "wow" effect from first playing it in 1991 was so huge it holds a special place in my heart. For a 1991 game, the graphics are pretty good, the sound fits perfectly (rather soothing!), gameplay is complex and variable, and replay value is gigantic. To me, Civilization is as close to perfection as a game can be. That's my pick. What's yours?

The intros of some 90s games with their epic monologues and bombastic music still gets me to this day! I feel that among the legends like Dune 2, Age of Empires and Command & Conquer, some games have gotten lost in the shuffle a bit - at least to a degree. One of those is Total Annihilation (1997), a groundbreaking real-time strategy game by Cavedog Entertainment, led by Chris Taylor. Interesting note: The producer of the game was none other than Ron Gilbert (the genius behind Maniac Mansion and Monkey Island). Players build massive armies, managing streaming metal and energy resources, limitless, gathered via extractors, for factories churning out tanks, aircraft, and nukes. Epic battles feature thousands of units, realistic physics, radar jamming, and Jeremy Soule's orchestral score. It has a 96% approval rating on Steam, so it shows that even today - almost 30 years later - TA still has a strong following and active mod community. It also shows that a selected group of those 90s games found the perfect balance between cocept, gameplay, difficulty and replayability, a true testament to greatness

For its time, it was incredibly ambitious, blending first-person action, strategy, and RPG elements into a pretty unique package.
