Why is status so important? Why do we care so much about it? It's a little taboo to talk about status directly. If someone says, "I want a promotion because I want higher status," people tend to look at them sideways. It sounds vain or self-serving, as though status is an unworthy motive. But notice what happens when we use different language. If someone says, "I want a promotion because I want more respect," that sounds perfectly reasonable. Most people would regard it as a legitimate and even admirable goal. Yet respect is, in many ways, just another form of status. Both involve being valued by others and being treated in a certain way. We may avoid the word "status," but much of what we call respect, recognition, prestige, or standing is simply status by another name.

People can tolerate almost anything except being looked down on. Alain de Botton wrote a great book called Status Anxiety. In it, he explains how status can ease intense suffering. He says, "Provided it is not accompanied by humiliation, discomfort can be endured without complaint. Soldiers and explorers willingly tolerated privations exceeding those suffered by the poorest of their societies, sustained by the awareness of the esteem in which they were held by others." He means that even when people had almost nothing and were in real physical pain, knowing that others respected them and would raise their status was enough to help them keep going.
