François Truffaut on why he got more pleasure in directing a child actor than an adult in his debut film, "The 400 Blows" (1959): "To shoot a film with children is very enticing beforehand, entails a lot of panic while it is happening (because it is a fearsomely challenging business that is always slipping through one’s fingers), and is immensely satisfying afterwards. Even when I have a feeling that everything is going adrift, there is always something that is salvageable, and no matter what happens, it is always the child who comes across best on the screen. I also think that I get more pleasure from directing a child than an adult because I am just starting out as a director, whereas adults have already had experience at acting. I tend to be intimidated by their “seniority,” and when they don’t want to do what I tell them, I sometimes give up the struggle, or else allow myself to be pulled along when they do their thing, and I am never sure I’m right. A child’s sincerity is something I think I can feel absolutely. For example, through the whole length of the film, I had to wrestle with Jean-Pierre Léaud. He was terrific, but he was scared that he was going to come across as unlikeable, which meant that he continually wanted to smile. For three whole months I prevented him from smiling … and I’m sure I was right. That said, I was amazingly lucky to come across that kid. He was the character. Better still, he improved the film. I had been seeing Antoine as more fragile, more timid, less aggressive, whereas Jean-Pierre gave him his robustness, his truculence, his courage. He was an invaluable collaborator. He was able to find the right gestures spontaneously, he adjusted the script, always for the better, and he used the words that he wanted to use." What the director told us is something we have to accept as actors that the audience will first interpret the character at face value. Because that’s what the director wants people to see at first. And later on, it will slowly be revealed why they came back and why they did that. The reasons behind the return will all be explained. But for now, the director wants the audience to see this person as a total red flag. Film: Right… Namtan: But even with that ‘red flag,’ I think everyone has a bit of a red flag in them. And those red flags all have their own reasons and backgrounds. Even if someone is a red flag, they’ll eventually learn their own lesson. Film: The difficult part for me is that it’s very far from who I am. And as P’Namtan said, I didn’t really have an image of it in my head. 🗣: How did you picture it? Namtan: It’s a lot of things Film: Like, Bambi’s life is just like this. She lives this way, she thinks this way. My job as an actor is to figure out why this character acts the way she does. And I’m the kind of person who feels that if I can’t find a reason for the character, I can’t perform. I wouldn’t know how to play her. So that’s the struggle trying to find the reason behind the character. 🗣: Like, how to move forward with the character? Film: Yeah, it became really complex because some of the characters' reasons… I just couldn’t quite understand them. I was just like… Namtan: It’s like… It’s like meeting someone in real life and thinking, I would never do what you do. But… I believe that usually, when we don’t like someone, we just don’t get involved with them, right? But as an actor, we have to get involved. We have to understand them so we can show the audience why this person does what they do. So it was quite a heavy feeling for me, because Bambi and I have completely different energies. And on top of that, I had to try to understand someone with that kind of energy. Film: In the end, I realized that everyone grows up differently—different stories, different experiences. 🗣: And acting with Namtan must have been… Namtan: Amazing! But it was a bit difficult because we’re so close that we keep laughing. So the scenes that were supposed to be emotional sometimes turned a bit funny. That was another challenge, because we love laughing together.
