What if, when you needed something organic, your design tool just did the physics? Right now anything that should bend, squish or react to another shape, you fake by hand with the pen tool. So I have been building a tool where shapes are actually soft.

That's awesome! I was already excited and then you pasted it into Paper and made my day. Really cool idea.

This is REALLY cool Fabio, therefore I expect this to be copied by “real” design tools… What’s your next move? I would publish this as a standalone tool and make the repo OS, make plugins for Figma, Framer(?), Paper (?).

Thanks Domenico! Agreed! :)

Now this is something very useful, all design tools should have physics built in, especially 2D physics. beyond me why they have not added it. love this, you should publish it, make it paid.

really cool tool, possible to have less anchor points? Because it use a lot of them here for a simple shape

Yes. We can definitely simplify/clean up some of the paths.

This is very interesting to me How would we be able to do that?

I will share more soon. Still iterating.

Very cool! I would love to see this interacting with arbitrary paths (e.g. squeezing two paths together). Have you done any experiments there?

Fabio's profile picture

Thanks Alex. Great articles on your blog! I did. Anything curvy will work reasonably well. See below and example. Let me know if this answers your question.

I think this unlocks something similar to how pretext.ks unlocked for text. Thin flexible boundaries between objects is just the future. Now someone do this for divs

idk how often designers underestimate the cognitive load of faking softness with the pen tool. actual physics in the tool means designers spend time on interaction and flow, not manual shape tweaks. in practice, that’s a 2x speedup in prototyping organic UI elements.

Codex has become a real game engine... If you take the time to make it become one. You can do EVERYTHING in it. And I think I've cracked the perfect custom UX? I'd like to show you how I use it. See video below 4 steps: - Create a custom tool you need, like one to generate new buildings that matches you game art direction - Ask Codex to open this tool in a worktree (important) - Attach the browser view of your tool in the Thread - Use pinned thread to have easy access to the tool And there you go: you have what I call a "codex-augmented" tool, which it's incredibly powerful because - the tool will speed up your development immensely AND also: - you can improve the tool as you use it with codex For example, let's say I want to add a new button to my 3D building gen tool so I can generate a thumbnail of the 3D building. - I click on "Building Lab" - I prompt Codex "add a button to generate thumbnails" - I have my new button - I can use the tool right away in the pinned Thread You can then use the /yeet skill to commit, push and create a PR with the changes you made to your tool. I have tools for everything - To manage my tasks in Linear - To do content / social media / steam marketing - To localize the game in 9 languages - To manage sounds, musics and voice lines - To generate and fine tune buildings - To create and animate procedural zombies - To tweak environnement/decor and map design - To manage my analytics - To simulate late game perf I'll be honest it's incredibly powerful and easy!
