They say Terafab is going to be built … they are wrong. It is already being built, right now! My first drone flight over the location of what will be the most advanced chip fabrication plant & largest building in the world … and surprise, just like the Giga Texas announcement, construction is already underway! Thank you to Tesla for approving my flight over this facility. Lots yet to come I am sure! Main video coming a bit later!

A large “oval” like outer track with what looks like a smaller oval track is definitely taking shape, and of course there will be support structures and more added as this project continues to make progress. Overall, the amount of construction around the Giga Texas project is approaching the original effort to make the main factory almost 6 years ago! It’s hard to keep track of it all, but I’m trying! Such an amazing story that has been, & continues to happen here just east of Austin!

Another massive new construction project underway at Giga Texas, this time on the very far W of the site across FM973 & near the Tesla Rd intersection. It looks like some of this is to move the rental equipment lot further away to allow a new graded area for a new construction project. What this is is still uncertain, but I do know changes in plans & permits have been underway as the entire Giga Texas site is seeing wide scale massive construction projects that are literally transforming what the overall campus visually looks like. We may hear more about all these projects at the 2nd Qtr Financial Results meeting on Wednesday … certainly the cash flow and Capital expenditures will be a topic of discussion, but you will already know all about that via the coverage of Giga Texas construction! 😎

Giga Texas News! A brand-new, stand-alone factory is starting construction! This follows the Shareholders meeting & info that a 10-million-per-year Tesla Optimus production facility "on the Giga Texas campus" will be built & enter into production in 2027! Here are some details! Land clearing on the E side, River Road expansion & several construction projects are already underway! In addition, the Giga Texas Riverfront Ecological Park project is proceeding along the same time frame & when completed, will allow public access to new sports parks, trails, water access & nature areas. We will see all of this throughout 2026 as Tesla prepares for the start of production in 2027!

We’re very grateful to Samsung, TSMC and others. We would like them to expand as quickly as they can, and we will buy all of their chips. There’s a maximum rate at which they’re comfortable expanding, but that rate is much less than we would like. So we’re going to build Terafab. The key missing ingredient is a terawatt of compute. I think the discussion about data centers in space is to address another potential bottleneck in the ecosystem, which is energy. I think the discussion around putting data center in space is there because if you do that, the energy consumption or the energy availability will be there, about trying to solve another potential big issue, which is energy for data center. I think the Terafab is an example of a major fab project."

Since I always get this question, this is NOT the Terafab that will be built likely a 100 miles or so to the east in Grimes Country, Texas. This is the smaller development facility that is the first part of the overall AI Chip development program.

Many still don’t understand why Elon is building Terafab Terafab is an extension to all the chip makers in the world It’s not about replacement, not a rivalry and absolutely not competing It’s being built to fulfill the massive chip orders that Tesla, SpaceX and xAI actually need TSMC’s most advanced 2nm capacity is totally booked through 2028 Tesla signed a massive $16.5 billion deal with Samsung back in July 2025 to produce AI6 chips at their Taylor, Texas factory and Samsung is building a Tesla Exclusive chip manufacturing plant to full fill this orders When Elon announced Terafab on March 21, 2026...he made it clear: “That rate is much less than we’d like. We either build the Terafab or we don’t have the chips, and we need the chips, so we build the Terafab” He basically told the chip makers: “Produce as much as you comfortably can. We will take them all. Actually we want even more” Even today Elon said: "SpaceX/Tesla will be always be major customers of TSMC and not competitors in the normal sense of the word" Current production rates are much less than they need....That’s why Terafab exists Terafab is an extension to every chip maker… not competition, not rivalry, absolutely not Even Intel has joined as a partner Even if chip supply improves, massive bottlenecks still exist with memory and advanced packaging You simply can't risk those supply chain breaks at this scale That’s why Terafab is being built to vertically integrate everything - chips, memory, advanced packaging all under one roof, targeting 1 terawatt of AI compute capacity per year This is a ludicrous amount of chips that no chipmaker currently produces at this scale. TERAFAB: Grimes County, TX - September 5th, 2026 Happy Labor Day! Here is my first flyover of the joint Tesla and SpaceX TERAFAB project in Grimes County, Texas. It was a gorgeous day for a flyover. The scattered showers made for a beautiful backdrop. I took this trip a learning expedition to find spots to fly from and how to get as close as possible. I was able to get some amazing footage. The video is in 4 parts. PART I: EARTHWORKS The first maps show the current land acquisitions by WIT TECH LLC, a Musk-linked / SpaceX-adjacent buyer. Compared to the TERAFAB scale I give you an idea of where the current clearing is taking place on the southeastern side of Gibbons Creek Reservoir. There is also a clearing further east with a substantial lake that will eventually need to be drained. PART II: 348.59 ACRE MILLENNIUM POWER PARCEL This is the tract on the west side of the reservoir, directly south of and next to the Grimes County Substation. SpaceX has said it will use natural-gas generators and Megapacks, so it is not clear what this area will be used for. There was a No Drone Video sign, so I only took photos. PART III: SUBSTATION & INTAKE Far to the west on the Navasota River, WIT TECH LLC acquired two parcels. One is a 3.83-acre plot with an 11,000 gal/min pump station. The second is a 1-acre plot on and over the river that includes an intake and low dam. SpaceX says this will be used to divert stormwater into the reservoir. PART IV: 433.79 ACRE ENERGY PARCEL This site sits northwest of the reservoir, between the old, removed coal plant and the 210 MW Grimes County Solar Farm. Elon Musk unveils plans for a Tesla and SpaceX factory the size of a small city Tesla and SpaceX plan to build the giant Terafab facility in Texas, covering around 9.3 million square meters near Houston. The companies want to manufacture chips and microchips there for cars and robots. If built at the announced scale, Terafab would become the largest building in the world. The project is estimated to cost around $119 billion. SpaceX says it plans to reduce the environmental impact by using reservoir water instead of groundwater, building its own wastewater treatment facilities, and using recycled materials wherever possible. Elon Musk unveils plans for a Tesla and SpaceX factory the size of a small city Tesla and SpaceX plan to build the giant Terafab facility in Texas, covering around 9.3 million square meters near Houston. The companies want to manufacture chips and microchips there for cars and robots. If built at the announced scale, Terafab would become the largest building in the world. The project is estimated to cost around $119 billion. SpaceX says it plans to reduce the environmental impact by using reservoir water instead of groundwater, building its own wastewater treatment facilities, and using recycled materials wherever possible. Construction timelines have not yet been announced.
