D-Branes and the Expansion of String Theory String Theory was already attempting to do something huge by trying to describe particles, forces, and gravity in one framework. Branes made that picture much richer. When Physicists found that open strings can end on objects called D-branes, many important ideas became easier to organize. Things like gauge fields, black hole microstates, holography, and deep dualities gained a clearer place inside the theory. They showed that String Theory is not only about tiny vibrating strings, but also about larger structures that help connect Quantum Physics, Geometry, and Gravity.

This is one of the wildest podcasts I’ve ever seen. I just wrapped a 2.5-hour deep dive on string theory with Peter Woit (Not Even Wrong) and Joseph Conlon (Why String Theory). Two sharp minds, two entirely opposing views. I’m not here to tell you who’s “right.” This is about the future of fundamental physics. It’s historic that the door is opening for these sorts of conversations to occur publicly and at length, with as much time given to each party as they need, while keeping it respectful, productive, and, of course, technical (it is TOE, after all). Some see string theory as being given a free pass (held to a different standard than competing theories). Some see it as a tool for probing high-energy YM/GR. Others see it as the best hope we have for a final theory of everything. The fact that this conversation even exists is remarkable, and I’m honored to play a small role in making it happen. Instead of everything being just 0-dimensional points or 1-dimensional strings, a Brane can have 2, 3 or more spatial dimensions Open strings can end on Branes, which means Branes act like boundaries for string motion. i saw a really nice comment about that moment when Prem’s clothing string got caught on Boun’s clothes 🥹 someone said that any ribbon, bow, cord, thread, etc. always ends up getting tangled between them because the red string of fate between them is already intertwined. back in uwma era, we had that with the red threads connecting their fingers. and we also had the iconic bouquet ribbon moment. i think this theory is real 55555 🥹
