Men are not threatened by having women in their spaces. His confusion is out of courtesy to who he thinks might have made an honest mistake. He wouldn’t care if the reaction was “I am a woman who prefers the men’s room.” He’d be like “ok cool.”

I've met many women in the men's room simply because the women's bathroom was full. Nobody cares. The men's bathroom has always been understood to be open to everyone. Only the women's bathroom has any restrictions. As it should be. Then again, I live in a high trust state with very low crime.
